Tomorrow's the Solstice and it's time for me to let some of my babies go out into the world. My journey with art has been healing, frustrating, engulfing, and elevating. I'm starting a new journey in my life and in my art...I'm excited for all that is to come!!!!!!

My father gave me permission to cry. Growing up as a water child with two water parents was not anything less than emotional. A life of Eb and Flow. I don't remember seeing my father cry more than two times. A Black Man born in the segregated south holding decades of unreleased trauma. This piece was for him. A reminder than he deserved release as much anyone else. With that release would come enlightenment and healing. He is a King Priest in my eyes, and that will never diminish. , , , , , , , , ,

This was my first public painting. I was so nervous. People watching as I do something that has been so intimate and healing. It didn't turn out the way that I wanted it to, but it taught me a lesson; which is what I have grown to know art to do.

When you are guided by spirit obstacles become smaller. Most times our two physical eyes get in the way of our sight. Rely on spirit to guide you. Spirit loves you. Thank to for the opportunity to grow and expand. I am ever grateful. , , , , , , , , , #

Untitled (Quilt Series)

HOMED!!!!

Most of us have seen traditional quilts made by Granny or Memaw, but not many are aware that those triangles and squares have meaning beyond warmth or even the love of our guardians.The patterns that we see in traditional quilting were used the Underground Railroad was active. Barn owners would put patterns (Barn Quilts) on the side of their barns as communication to enslaved blacks reclaiming their freedom by traveling north on the Underground Railroad. Detroit has connection to this rich history. We have one of the last stops for The Underground Railroad. I believe this is in part foundational to our pride. Understanding that it took camaraderie, a recognition that freedom is a fundament right and a willingness to take action in that belief, we (Detroiters) move with an awareness that few other places possess.

I’m approaching the 10 anniversary of the transition of the my mother. It’s an experienced that can never be described, so I’ll not try. In the past 10 years, I have learned more about my mother than I could have ever hoped to imagine. I see her in me daily; in my movements, in my thoughts, in the songs that I sing. I am my mother’s daughter and she is ever present. Yaya is a depiction of spirit, my connection to my matrilineal line and the knowledge that my relationship with my mother did not end, it expanded. , , , , , , , , ,
