🌹 brought the to Mack & Bewick, her hometown, her stomping grounds. For me, it was the intersection of two streets I grew up hearing not to go down. And somehow, being there, creating alongside community, felt like a breath of fresh air.
It reminded me that our people exist far beyond the spaces we’ve decided art belongs. There’s a whole population of Detroit that may never enter the gallery, the theater, the museum, or the curated room to hear what we’ve been saying. So maybe it’s time to get back to unconventional stages. Guerrilla creating. Meeting people where they are. Returning home.
Because what else is the purpose of art if it doesn’t eventually feed back into the places and people that raised us?
Rose tasked me with live painting a rose coming through concrete over the course of three acts: concrete, stem, then rose. 🌹
By the end, I think the painting meant a little more to me than when I started it.
