Let’s learn about the choreographer for Gutenberg! The Musical! The wonderful Megan Helmers!

Megan Helmers is a Minneapolis-based choreographer whose work has been featured across the midwest. A Resident Artist at Theatre Cedar Rapids, Megan’s recent choreography includes Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Guys & Dolls, Disney’s Frozen, Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray, Beauty and the Beast, Fun Home, Carrie the Musical, and Something Rotten! for Theatre Cedar Rapids; La Cage Aux Folles, Next to Normal, Spelling Bee, and Titanic for Revival Theatre Company; and Little Shop of Horrors and Kinky Boots at the Des Moines Playhouse. In addition to her work with area theaters, she has choreographed productions for Hamline University, the University of Central Missouri, Simpson College, Iowa State University, Grandview University, and many more.

Megan’s most recent work as a Director/Choreographer includes Theatre Cedar Rapids’s School of Rock, Des Moines Young Artists’ Theatre’s Heathers: The Musical and Bring it On, and Tallgrass Theatre’s Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, The Revolutionists, and The Bridges of Madison County.

Megan works in digital marketing for the arts at Capacity and has taught various dance styles for the Drake University Theatre Department, The School of Classical Ballet and Dance, and more. meganhelmers.com

Time to learn about our cast and crew for Gutenberg! The Musical! Starting first with our wonderful stage manager, Justine Williamson.

Justine Williamson is a Des Moines native. Her stage managing experience includes Frozen at Des Moines Playhouse, Pippin at Waukee High School, Camelot at Tallgrass Theatre, I Do, I Do at West Virginia Public Theatre, and Cinderella at The University of Northern Iowa. A middle school theatre teacher for Waukee Schools, Justine also serves as a director for that program, with recent credits being Between the Lines Jr., Finding Nemo Jr., and High School Musical Jr. Enjoy the Show!

History lesson time! Listen up!

(About Gutenberg! The Musical!, we will give you a break on ole’ Johannes)

Gutenberg! The Musical! began as a rough, 45‑minute workshop piece at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where it functioned almost like an improv sketch, with a loose structure and very minimal staging. As it moved into the New York Musical Theatre Festival and early London productions in 2005 and 2006, the creators, Scott Brown and Anthony King, expanded it into a full-length show, adding more songs, clearer structure, and a more fully developed “show‑within‑a‑show” format.

By its 2006–2007 Off‑Broadway run, the piece had largely settled into its now-familiar form: two actors playing all the roles with labeled hats, a defined comedic arc, and a sharper parody of Broadway conventions. Over the following years of regional and international productions, directors and performers continued to refine the pacing, choreography, and comic timing, tightening what was originally a deliberately “messy” spoof into something more precise.

Gutenberg! The Musical! Ultimately reached Broadway in 2023, nearly two decades after its earliest workshop origins.

On the night of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 7:30 p.m. CDT, myself and about 34 other people saw a production by About Time Theatre of White Rabbit Red Rabbit at the xBk Annex, as performed by Mary Bricker. It was, I imagine, a different show than what a largely different audience saw....
