We had so much fun helping people learn to tell their stories through comics at Sunday’s workshop. Thank you to everyone who came out and shared their stories and art so bravely! Creating art evokes many feelings, not the least of which is vulnerability, and our hearts are just filled with gratitude to each and every one of you.
This comic was created by and tells the story of learning a folk art from her grandmother.
Image one shows the full page comic, featuring four panels.
Image two contains the comic’s title in embellished letters. “How I Learned to Embroider BY: Alisha Sweeney”
Image three shows a small Alisha holding a basket labeled “super cool sewing basket” while her grandmother irons nearby. The grandmother says, “Peach Marie, make grandpa a picture!” The caption reads, “When I was little my grandma always encouraged creativity with a needle & thread…”
Image four depicts a blank handkerchief, labeled “My canvas was my grandpa’s hankies (before)”. The caption reads, “I would take her magical sewing basket & dream up a picture to freehand sew & open up the basket & pick out the thread!”
Image four shows five small embroidered canvases, with images like a car traveling, a piano keyboard, and a camera. The caption reads, “This gave me the courage to create. After she died many years later, I revisited this craft & had an art show in her honor @ 60 S Broadway in Denver. My new love was DJing, so I DJed the show, too! I embroidered some of my favorite things on abstractly painted canvases! It was called ‘New Wave (sm)ART Projects”. Thanks grandma, miss you every day!”
