Bucharest Inside the Beltway

Bucharest Inside the Beltway Denver multicultural arts & culture platform, inspired by the fearlessness of Bucharest. Est. DC 2014
(8)

Bucharest Inside the Beltway (BiB) is an independent local & international arts & culture platform sponsored by non-profit Fractured Atlas (that accepts tax-deductible donations on BiB’s behalf). When studying at the University of Bucharest on a Fulbright, Cristina Bejan met Rucsandra Pop, who was organizing a literary festival in a hip new cafe in Bucharest's historic Geology Museum. Pop invited

Bejan to contribute a live-reading of her play "Colombo Calling - a play from Sri Lanka" which featured actors from across Bucharest's eclectic and diverse theatre world, including the world famous Maia Morgenstern. Then Pop won a Fulbright to study at the University of Indiana. These two playwrights and poets have been scheming about just such an international and local culture and arts collective since their initial collaboration in 2008. Think the Fulbright Association meets the pre-2012 incarnation of the Romanian Cultural Institute and you have Bucharest Inside the Beltway.

Bucharest Inside the Beltway is pleased to introduce the grassroots creative selected for our Denver Artist Residency Program 2023 ... JELISA JAY ROBINSON. A playwright from Houston, Texas, with many national credits to her name - Robinson brings a fresh new perspective to BiB. We discovered her work during our RADIANCE Playwrights' Residency application process and knew that a more focused opportunity would fit best. Robinson will be developing her original play "We Both Suck Our Teeth" with Bucharest Inside the Beltway in partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver's Theatre & Dance Department. Students from "Staging Cultures," MSU Denver's multicultural theatre course will work with Robinson via Zoom to develop her play and then perform a portion of the script in their final play showcase - to be performed at the CVA - Center for Visual Art, MSU Denver in December 2023 (exact date/time TBD). Please check out her website: www.jelisajayrobinson.com and follow her on Instagram: to support her work!🌟

When was founded in in 2014, we published the BiB on our website. It addresses our arts & culture platform’s apolitical nature and our strong commitment to ~ grounded in Romania’s lived experience of oppression under totalitarianism. Coming soon! As we are used to every year, EUROPEAN LITERATURE NIGHT 2023 brings to New York some of the best European writers and contemporary literature! RSVP now and join us at the Ukrainian Institute of America!

Romania will be represented by Kat Mustatea, a Romanian-American transmedia playwright and artist whose language and performance works enlist absurdity, hybridity, and the computational uncanny to dig deeply into what it means to be human. Her TED talk, about AI as a form of puppetry, offers a novel take to the meaning of generative art-making. She is a member of ONX Studio (Onassis Foundation) and a fellow at CPH:DOX, and was previously a resident at TED and a member of NEW INC, an art and tech incubator at The New Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work has been presented at Ars Electronica Linz, New Images Festival Paris, Stanley Picker Gallery London, New York Live Arts, and The Cube at Virginia Tech, among others.

📖 European Literature Night 2023

This annual event is a vibrant showcase of contemporary European writers, spanning genres from fiction to poetry, memoir, and history. My completed mural for at • Aerosol on wood • 20’ x 8’ • This mural will be installed in the plaza at Mission Ballroom. I aimed to create something musically inspired while encompassing both retro and futuristic elements. Within the piece, you’ll discover various shapes influenced by musical instruments and equipment, such as midi controllers, piano keys and cassette tapes.

is proud to support artist .mccord on his latest project 💜

We're storytellers, creatives and we're jumping into pre-producing of our film, "The Light At The Edge". Writer Mac McCord received an Artist Support Grant from the Durham Arts Council for 2021-2022. This grant will help us begin the pre-production process. But it does take a village to get the full film funded. We're so excited to have collaborating in writing the music and orchestration. Thank you for donating to our project, the links are in our Bio.
