On the evening of August 26, my wife Katelyn and I were down at the creek that runs through our nonprofit animal sanctuary, Clear Creek Adventure Ranch – Rescue & Education, when our lives changed in a matter of seconds.
I was bitten three times in the hand by a very large water moccasin/cottonmouth.
We immediately called 911 and started heading toward the emergency room in Denton, Texas.
My condition started declining quickly.
I was given 8 vials of antivenom, but despite the antivenom, the swelling, pain, and effects of the venom continued to spread.
I was transferred to a larger hospital in Fort Worth, where doctors continued fighting to get everything under control.
Since the bite, I have received another 40 vials of antivenom — 48 vials total — and there is still a possibility I may need another 10 vials.
The damage and swelling in my hand became so severe that I had to undergo emergency surgery in an effort to save my hand and the tissue affected by the venom.
I’m still in the hospital and I have another surgery scheduled for Tuesday to perform a skin graft on my hand.
Multiple doctors who have treated me have told me that this is one of the worst snakebite reactions they have ever seen.
This has, without a doubt, been the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life.
Thankfully, as of right now, I finally feel like we’re getting close to getting over the hump.
I’m praying the worst is behind me.
But that recovery is going to take time.
My surgeon has told me that once I’m released from the hospital, I won’t be able to work or do my normal physical activities for at least six weeks.
And that brings me to another reality that is hard to even comprehend right now.
As of right now, my hospital bill is already over $500,000 — and I don’t have health insurance.
Antivenom is incredibly expensive and I’ve been given 6 times what the normal situation gets.
I’ve already had to refund families who had me scheduled to show up as Spider-Man for their children’s birthdays and events.
Those appearances are part of how I make a living while also helping support everything Katelyn and I do every single day.
My wife and I also operate Clear Creek Adventure Ranch, a nonprofit animal sanctuary that provides a forever home to more than 60 rescued animals.
When an animal comes to our sanctuary, we make a commitment to them that this is their forever home.
But right now, my family, our animals, and I could really use some help.
