POV: You stumble upon a still life

I love walking into an artist’s space and seeing their mind at work. This is exactly what happened in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

I walked into Tim McGuire’s gallery and found him surrounded by his inspiration.

I found it magical to see his set up left out so I could see the space between inspiration and his finished work.

Tim McGuire’s Gallery is a feast for the eyes!

On my most recent visit, Tim was live painting. Which was an unexpected treat that made the experience even better!

His studio walls are covered floor to ceiling with his bold, thick-lined expressionist works. The colors grab your attention while the heavy brushstrokes pull you deeper into each painting.

Being surrounded by so much color, texture, and creative energy is absolutely invigorating. You can feel the energy all around you as you walk from piece to piece.

Sometimes you find the art, and sometimes the art finds you.

While driving to Lunenburg, I crossed paths with an artist who touched my soul. Philip Hodges welcomed me into his beautiful little world, and his work reminded me of something I deeply believe: art is about healing and connection.

His art brought two strangers together. It gave us a reason to talk, for him to show me his studio, and, most importantly, for him to share a piece of himself with me.

These are the moments I chase beauty for. Never give up the chase.

See the world through Emily Graetz eyes!

I came across this gem in a hand-knit sweater in Lunenburg at the Laurie Swim Gallery. We bonded instantly over our shared love of lobsters 🦞 and, of course, her art!

Blending surrealism with realism, Emily’s landscapes transport you somewhere that feels both familiar and entirely imagined.

Beginning her artistic life as a photographer, Emily carries that photographic eye into her acrylic paintings. She first captures a photograph and then uses it as a reference to recreate a place that feels like you could have been there before, many times.

Meet photographer James Gray 📷

Based in Nova Scotia, James Gray has an eye for the moments most of us might simply walk past. His photography captures more than a place or person. He has a way with his camera that can preserve a moment that will never exist in quite the same way again.

I met James while visiting in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where one of his photographs spoke to me on many levels. It told me to take life slower and be thankful of the here and now.

In my newest Art Story, I explore James’s work and what his photography taught me about slowing down, paying attention, and our ability to capture a fleeting piece of time.

Photography is so often overlooked as an art form, but a photograph can do something extraordinary: it can cheat time.

On my recent trip to Nova Scotia, I met photographer James Gray and discovered how his work captures more than beautiful scenes. It preserves feelings, memories, and even evidence of things that no longer exist.

A little skiff that one day simply disappeared.

James caught them both with more than an image, he was able to capture the essence of the moment in time.

Entering an artist’s studio is like walking into their brain.
It was such a pleasure to step inside the space where Elisha Frontz creates her emotionally captivating pieces. She works across many different mediums, creating tactile works that invite you on a visual journey.

In my latest blog post, I dive into one of these pieces, God’s Eye, part of her series Cold Comfort. Made from spent scratch-off lottery tickets, this quilt holds a deeply personal story of family, addiction, loss, and legacy.
