The hills I’ll die on as a professional dog trainer šŸ‘‡

The longer I work with dogs and their owners, the more strongly I feel about certain things. Dog training is full of different opinions, methods, and philosophies, and I don’t expect everyone to agree with mine.

But these are a few things I will stand behind every single time.

1. Not every dog is the right dog for every home.
Breed, genetics, temperament, drive, energy level, and lifestyle all matter. Sometimes a dog and owner are simply a mismatch. That doesn’t make either one bad. It means we need to be realistic about what that particular dog needs to thrive.

2. Loving your dog doesn’t automatically teach them how to navigate the world.
Love matters. So do communication, boundaries, consistency, training, and advocating for your dog. You can love your dog more than anything and still need help figuring out how to meet their needs.

3. Training problems aren’t always training problems.
Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another sit, down, or place session. Dogs need appropriate physical outlets, mental stimulation, rest, enrichment, biological fulfillment, and opportunities to just be dogs. Training works a whole lot better when those needs are being met too.

4. Good dog training isn’t a quick fix.
Social media makes it really easy to see a before-and-after video and forget everything that happened between those two clips. Behavior change takes repetition, consistency, time, and sometimes a whole lot of patience.

5. Freedom should be earned through clarity and reliability.
Giving a dog unlimited freedom before they understand what’s expected of them can create more problems, not fewer. Management and structure aren’t punishments. They’re tools we can use while teaching the dog how to make better choices.

6. Obedience isn’t the end goal.
I don’t care about creating little robots. I want dogs who understand how to live successfully with their people while still getting to be dogs. Obedience is simply one of the tools that helps us get there.

7. Your dog does not need to love everyone.
Not every dog wants to play with other dogs. Not every dog wants strangers touching them. And that is okay. Neutrality is incredibly valuable. A dog who can calmly exist around people and dogs without interacting with them is still a well-socialized dog.

And maybe the biggest one:

Train the dog in front of you.

There isn’t one perfect method, tool, reward, or training plan that works for every dog. My job isn’t to force every dog into the same box. It’s to figure out what that individual dog needs, teach the owner how to communicate with them, and help the two of them build a relationship that actually works in real life.

That’s the kind of dog training I believe in.
