8 vintage USAC sprint cars and drivers took part in a unique day at Arlington Raceway yesterday. We rolled the clock and rules back to season one and brought out some of the original cars that started the club. They were fun to race and we’d forgotten about the smell of those Parma 16D motors. Sweet electricity! A familiar car to victory lane, the Cary Faas 37 replica once again took a checkered flag driven by Joe Stroehle after passing uncle Jimmy in the closing laps. Elliott Stroehle took third in his original car, Mike Stroehle 4th in the first USAC car ever built and Rick Porembski 5th in one of his first cars from season 2. Shawn Christian was also fast in the 80 car and George Stroehle had mechanical woes in the black 92x which was originally a white 83 built by none other than Mike Sr. We actually utilized vintage Strombecker 12 volt transformers at this race like we used to have on Mike Sr.’s old tracks. That familiar hum they make filled the air with good memories of days gone by but not forgotten. It was a fun day for all and we look forward to getting more cars available for more folks to enjoy!
