This was day 2 of our BLACK GIRL MAGIC
segement, where we learned about self-love and how our accomplishments can fuel our sense of self-worth, but we emphasized how we should value our accomplishments, but we can’t tie our worth to our accomplishments—our grades, our jobs, our relationships, etc. Self-love is an INTERNAL process.

We created a timeline with phenomenal black women and aligned our accomplishments alongside theirs!

Successful first Career Day at Centre! Mentees had the opportunity to shadow a mentor, while engaging in a variety of different workshops such as resume building and an entrepreneurship/social branding workshop.

Later in the day, we explored the issue of: who we are? Who others say we are? Who do we want to be?

***NEW MENTOR ALERT**

Name: Dahabo Kerow

Hometown: Louisville, KY

Majors/Minors: International Studies w/ Religion Minor

Interests: Law, Reading, Volunteerism, Traveling, Community building

Career Aspirations: Becoming an attorney, Study the history of Somali Bantus, and work in advocacy field for Muslims, Black Americans and Immigrants. I hope to be able to contribute to a multitude of areas where my skills can be applied.

Self-Care Strategies: Myself care methods are still forming. However, something that I do frequently is I watch my favorite tv shows such as a Korean Drama or Law and Order: SVU. For me finding some alone time or writing in a journey has become my central go to selfcare method.

Reasons why you’re a MAGIC Mentor AND Why Mentoring Young Black Women Matters:

Mentorship creates inspiration, hope and relationships.
These are factors that have contributed to my ability to pursue higher education. An interaction or just a friendly face to talk to might seem minimal, however, I am living proof of the enormous impact it can have. Young Black Women will encounter so many obstacles in this world. They will undergo numerous hardships and emotional distress. However, while they are fighters, they shouldn’t have to go through this alone. It’s crucial that these young women have a support system. Carrying the burdens of life can be tiresome, and I believe this mentorship is a small way to remove this burden from these young women. This is why I am excited to partake in this program because it proclaims the message: we will share their burden.

Name: Shannon Russell

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

Majors/Minors: Environmental Studies/Spanish

Interests: Sports, Romantic Movies, Nature

Career Aspirations: Environmental Engineer

How do you practice Self-Care: I practice self care by dedicating at least an hour a day to myself where I can meditate and reflect on what is going on in my life. I use this time to listen to soft music and journal the thoughts that may be running through my head at the moment.

Reasons why you’re a MAGIC Mentor AND Why Mentoring Young Black Women Matters: I am a MAGIC Mentor because I want to be a part of a group that encourages self love and motivation to young black women and explains why it is important. Mentoring young black women matters because it is important for them to know how powerful, beautiful, and strong they are and how to have control over their own minds, bodies, and destinies.

Reasons why you’re a MAGIC Mentor AND Why Mentoring Young Black Women Matters:
Being a MAGIC Mentor allows me to serve an underrepresented community and to hopefully develop meaningful relationships with young black women. I hope to be a role model to these women because I want to see more black women succeed in our society. Young black women need to see that anything is possible, and I hope that we can further fuel their drive and focus. Change is necessary in our society and I want to be a part of that change.
