England and France have had very different histories in FIFA World Cup third-place matches.

England have appeared in the third-place playoff twice before today, and lost on both occasions. Their first came at Italia ’90, where Bobby Robson’s side fell 2–1 to hosts Italy after losing a dramatic semi-final on penalties to West Germany. Their second appearance was at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Gareth Southgate’s young side were beaten 2–0 by Belgium, finishing fourth after a memorable run to the semi-finals.

France have a much stronger record in the bronze-medal match, having played it three times before today. They famously defeated West Germany 6–3 in 1958, with Just Fontaine scoring four goals on his way to a record 13-goal World Cup tally. France returned to the match in 1982, losing 3–2 to Poland, before claiming third place again in 1986, defeating Belgium 4–2 after extra time.

Heading into today’s meeting, England were looking for their first-ever World Cup third-place victory, while France were aiming to win the bronze medal for the third time, adding another chapter to one of the tournament’s oldest traditions.
