Exhibition essay by Caitlin Julia Ruben

Why do you look that way?

“The question grates. At first, it seems to point out an observed flaw or problem: a failure to fit into what is expected or to match what is broadly accepted. Yet, taken at a different slant, it turns into a question for the viewer, instead: why do you see the world as you do?

Inherited histories, memories, and meanings mold the frame of individual perspective, just as what has not been represented constrains a point of view. We are often unwitting accomplices in this censorship, unable to see beyond the ordered systems and forced dichotomies we have been handed. But—as the artists in this exhibition demonstrate—if we are bold enough to look differently, we can also be the creators of change, expanding our own sense of self as well as the potential of what the world might be.”

-Caitlin Julia Ruben
