Kansas Art Guild (KAG) meets monthly so local artists can come together and share their art. Open to anyone in the Wichita area.

Our September meeting was very well attended. Our membership has reached 83. Maybe we’ll make 100 for our 50 year anniversary in 2027!
Mary Binford Miller was our guest speaker and judge. During her demo she stressed how important value is in our paintings. Also proper framing for showing. She shared that at the state fair one year the judge told her her painting would have been Best of Show but the frame had gapped a little on one side of the large painting (the cowboy shown here).
People’s Choice went to Dan Carpenter for his dynamic watercolor. It also won First Place in his category. Karyl Barbosa took Best of Show for her oil painting. Congratulations artists!

Kansas Art Guild held its August meeting as usual at Mark Arts on Tuesday, August 4, at 1:00. Jim Rigg was our speaker and judge. Jim is a graduate of Fine Arts/Graphics from WSU. He worked for 22 years at KSU as the Creative Director/Graphic Designer. Retiring in 2013 he went on to teach and hold workshops in his main focus, water media.

Our Best in Show for August went to Karen Funcheon for her imaginative mixed media/fiber piece. People’s Choice went to a new member for her lovely pastel. Congratulations artists!

Our group art exhibit will be on display at Larksfield Place from August 1 through November 5. Come say hello at the opening reception Saturday August 1.

Linda Werhan was our guest speaker and judge for July’s meeting. She is an educator with 32 years of experience. Her message was a simple one but also profound. Be on the lookout for beauty, share that beauty and try new things. Isn’t that the best way to approach our art?

Linda demonstrated a new surface by Ampersand called Aquaboard. It’s a textured clay surface with a hardboard backing. Even watercolor can be used on this surface and sealed eliminating the need for glass.

Top winners for July were Bob Heath and Janet Inlow who tied for People’s Choice. Bob Neace won Best of Show. Congratulations artists!

Currently, we are exhibiting paintings at Presbyterian Manor in Wichita until the end of July. August we will be exhibiting at Larksfield Place, 7373 E. 29th Street N. This exhibit will hang until November 6.

Kansas Art Guild meets the first Tuesday of the month at 1:00 at Mark Arts. Come see what we might be up to next!

Our June art guild meeting was a real happening! Guest speaker was Kayann Ausherman, a mixed media artist and teacher from Haven. Her work as she describes it is whimsical and playful. She uses a unique combination of collage, paints and ink utilizing unusual materials like wrappers, envelopes, stamps and papers that catch her eye. The joy in her paintings certainly reaches out to the viewer! She encouraged us to experiment and play. That’s where you’ll find growth as an artist. You learn from the times you ask what if? Even if that particular painting doesn’t work out.

Sharon Zimmerman won first place in her division plus People’s Choice! Nancy Luttrell took away Best of Show. Congratulations artists!

Kansas Art Guild met for its May meeting at Mark Arts on the first Tuesday at 1:00 as usual. Our speaker and juror was Rachel Curtis, a full time art instructor at Butler Community College. Rachel talked about her process and when to say a painting is finished. She also shared how she became a professor, from a GED in high school to a Bachelor of Fine Arts from KSU and Masters of Fine Arts from WSU to teaching at Butler. She is represented by Gold City Gallery in El Dorado.
May’s Best of Show went to Brenda Keller for her watercolor of her and her friend and fellow artist Patti Doll.
People’s Choice and first place in her category went to Diane Smith for her striking painting of a longhorn.

At our April meeting Naomi Ullum gave an excellent presentation on preparing and framing artwork, an often overlooked but so very important part of being an artist. Naomi has national awards in decorative art plus years of teaching art at Central Christian College of Kansas (retiring in 2017) and continuing to teach in Hutchinson and Wichita.
April’s Best of Show went to Lesa Gardener for her lovely floral acrylic painting. Skip Kreibach won First Place in his category and People’s Choice for his exquisite pastel.

Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton is hosting a show for the guild this month and the show runs through May 8! The reception for the show was very well attended on Saturday. Many thanks to Mary Lee, the director, and the board of the gallery.

Drop in and see the extraordinary art of our guild. Carriage Factory Gallery is at 128 E. Sixth Street in Newton. They are open Tuesday through Friday noon to 5:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 5:00.
