Our March meeting was one I know you’ll be sorry you missed. Don Praseuth of Wichita Fine Arts Atelier (WFAA) was our presenter and judge. If you want to learn art and how to draw he is the teacher to choose. Don did a short demo explaining as he drew. Some pointers: repetition (drawing a lot!) with inexpensive materials, conte pencil, newsprint tablet and a kneaded eraser are all you need to start. Squint down so you only see values (light and dark) and simplify your drawings. In fact, everything he said was worth repeating but I can’t put it all in this short space!

Brenda Keller won People’s Choice for her colored pencil portrait and Diane Smith won Best of Show for her western landscape. I am so happy to be associated with these talented artists! Come join us the first Tuesday of each month at Mark Arts. Meetings start at 1:00.

Melinda Weis, a well loved instructor at Mark Arts, was our presenter and judge at the Kansas Art Guild February meeting. She explained and demonstrated the methods necessary to get depth in your paintings, warm to cool colors, color saturation, soft or hard lines and object sizes and placement within the painting.
Best in Show for February went to Diane Pavelka for her beautiful pastel landscape. (Sorry for the reflection of the photographer’s shirt in the photo Diane 🙄). Karen Funcheon’s delightful mixed media piece shared the People’s Choice award with Brenda Keller’s colored pencil. Congratulations artists!
Kansas Art Guild meets monthly on the first Tuesday at 1:00 at Mark Arts. Join us in March for inspiration and camaraderie with fellow artists. First visits are free and membership is just $30.00 a year.

First meeting of 2026! Bob Neace, our new vice president, was our speaker and judge. He is a graduate of WSU and worked as a graphic designer until he retired. His acrylic landscapes are stunning. He talked about his process, about thinking and painting “outside the box.” He never starts a painting on stark white canvas. Toning the canvas with an overall color (he often uses a vibrant orange background) adds depth to the finished painting. The Flint Hills are often a subject for his pieces. He feels his painting has evolved from a more realistic style to an impressionistic style. Bob keeps exploring new subjects and styles as he thinks outside the box encouraging us to do the same.

Karen Holiday’s lovely multimedia piece won Best of Show and People’s Choice. She shares People’s Choice with Janet Inlow’s beautiful landscape. Congratulations artists!

KAG meets the first Tuesday of the month at Mark Arts at 1:00. However, the February meeting will be February 10 due to a scheduling conflict. Come join us on the 10th or first Tuesday of the following months.

Our guild meeting was held today (September 1) at 1:00 at Mark Arts. Our speaker and judge was one of our own. Lori Jones is an award winning graphite and charcoal artist. She shared some really great points with us for improving our artwork and also the business side of our art.
Artwork theme was “Reflections.” Phyllis Provost-Saas won 1st in her category and People’s Choice. Best of Show went to Diane Pavelka. Congratulations you two!
Come visit our art show now hanging in Mark Arts. The reception is Friday September 5, 5:00-7:00. Come say hello and meet some of the artists in the group. As Lori stressed in her presentation, artists should be supportive and collaborative with each other, not just competitive. That’s what we’re all about! We’d love to tell you some more about our great group.

We had Melinda Weis as our presenter and judge for our July meeting. She talked about a new app that creates a grid on photos you download to it. Sizing your painting from the photo then becomes easily done. Melinda also talked about her journey as an artist and the disappointments when entering shows or competitions. So many of us feel discouraged when rejected time and time again. She reminded us that all judging is subjective and not to give up hope. Do it for the love of art then the disappointments aren’t so sharp.

Karen Holiday’s multimedia painting won Best of Show and Shanthi Fernando’s buffalo won People’s Choice. Congratulations you two!

It’s the first Tuesday of June and Kansas Art Guild met today for our monthly meeting. Our guest speaker and judge was Vivian Zavataro, director of the Ulrich Art Museum. She told us about some exciting things going on at the Ulrich which turned 50 years old in 2024. We are definitely lucky to have the art sources here in Wichita that we have. Winners of top ribbons today were Sharon Zimmerman for Best of Show and Phyllis Provost-Saas for People’s Choice. Congratulations ladies!
