Today's rhythm is of Afro-Cuban origins, including an anti colonial secret society of the same name:
Abakua Matanzas!

The organization was created by enslaved peoples, and aided in the hiding of runaway slaves, as well as providing funding for funerals, and other aims.

The rhythm is regarded as a major influence in the progression of Cuban music, particularly Rumba!

Its been a while!
The of today originates from Pernambuco, in Northeastern : Ciranda!

This music is accompanied by a dance. The dancers are arranged in a circle, and as time passes, the music becomes more frenzied and much faster.

Superfluous Modernity

It's been a while, folks. I haven't been very active on this blog in a while. I got sidetracked with a couple of relationships that could best be described as the foolhardiness of a man attempting to love a hybrid of a T-800 and a rabid honey badger. Also, playing gigs, losing residencies, learning new instruments, considering new occupations, and watching the nation lose its fu***ng mind....

Today's is Chorinho! (AKA "choro")

This rhythm originates from Rio de Janeiro during the 19th century, and is usually played a lot faster than I am playing it in the video.
Virtuosity is the name of the game here! Chorinho is widely considered one of the first urban popular musics of Brazil.

I figured that I'd practice a wee bit, since we're in the throes of The Great Texas Snowmageddon.
I previously posted a video of myself playing this rhythm on two congas...gotta learn it on three.
This rhythm is often played in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and a few other places in Latin America.
Fun Fact: "A Caballo" translates to "On Horseback".
