Superfluous Modernity

It's been a while, folks. I haven't been very active on this blog in a while. I got sidetracked with a couple of relationships that could best be described as the foolhardiness of a man attempting to love a hybrid of a T-800 and a rabid honey badger. Also, playing gigs, losing residencies, learning new instruments, considering new occupations, and watching the nation lose its fu***ng mind....

Today's is Chorinho! (AKA "choro")

This rhythm originates from Rio de Janeiro during the 19th century, and is usually played a lot faster than I am playing it in the video.
Virtuosity is the name of the game here! Chorinho is widely considered one of the first urban popular musics of Brazil.

I figured that I'd practice a wee bit, since we're in the throes of The Great Texas Snowmageddon.
I previously posted a video of myself playing this rhythm on two congas...gotta learn it on three.
This rhythm is often played in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and a few other places in Latin America.
Fun Fact: "A Caballo" translates to "On Horseback".

Today, I'm revisiting a rhythm that I have previously posted, but at the time, I was playing two congas.
Now, Im playing three.

Today's rhythm is Timba, a derivative of Cuban folkloric music and sacred Santeria

Today's rhythm halls from , and was created by the rural mountain folk of the island. This music has influences from Africa, Spain, and Taino people. Seis Chorreao (Six couple dance) is the accompanying dance of this rhythm. Both rhythm and dance become faster, and more lively.

HEAR THIS, MORTALS OF BISHOP ARTS.

The hour draws near.
The air trembles. The groove awakens.

Our return to the Bishop Arts District is IMMINENT, and resistance will be… rhythmically futile.

All shall despair.
All shall dance.
All shall kneel before the unstoppable dominion of DOOM-FUNK.

From shadowed stages and bass-heavy lairs rise your inevitable rulers:

THE LORDS OF DOOM-FUNK
ROGUES GALLERY

We do not ask for your allegiance.
We take it, one thunderous beat at a time.
Your minds will bend. Your feet will obey. The world will groove under our iron funk.

Prepare yourselves.
The conquest begins January 2, 2026 at 8 PM at Revelers Hall.

Today's was created by pianist and composer Bebo Valdez. He incorporated sacred Bata drums into a Big Band jazz setting and thus created the rhythm that I'm playing in this : Batanga!

Actually, I'm playing a variation of the rhythm that was created by the legendary Cuban percussionist José Luis Quintana, aka Changuito!

Today's halls from a town of the same name in eastern : pilòn! This music gained popularity across Cuba in the 1950s.
It has been said that the motions involved in playing this rhythm mimick those of people who are pounding sugarcane.
