Hello all. As many of you know, we have wildlife that comes to visit our pond. There are many ducks, fish, and reptiles who find this a cozy place. People love to come to observe the animals in the wild who come and go. In fact, the only animals owned by the cemetery are the two black swans who were a gifted to the park. These swans are beautiful but also extremely aggressive. We have caution signs posted on the fence to warn visitors to keep their distance. We don't want to see anyone get hurt, so we caution everyone to keep their distance.

We are aware of the famous duck who has been sighted at our pond with the injury. This wild duck showed up in the Spring with what appears to be a small branch sticking through its wing. The duck did not appear to be in pain and has been thriving in his new home. We have been documenting our friend's journey this summer and his situation continues to improve from when he first arrived.

We have sought multiple professional opinions regarding his injury and the consensus was to leave him alone until we saw a change in behavior. A representative from a wildlife rehabilitation center visited today and agreed with our course of action. Attempts to capture or chase our feathered friend could scare him into doing more harm than good and causing further damage.

It has come to our attention that some folks recently became concerned about our friend. We have been monitoring him for months and will continue to do so. We value the wildlife that visits Chestnut Hill (not just the pond) every day. Should something change, we will be in contact with the appropriate professionals who can help. Thank you all so much for your concern.

Sincerely,

The Chestnut Hill Memorial Park Staff
