Satluj / Punjab ’95 is a film whose story is powerful, but its journey to the audience was even more unusual.

The film is set around a troubled period in Punjab, when violence and fear deeply affected ordinary people’s lives.

But the most unusual part of the film is what happened after it was made.

Originally titled Punjab ’95, the film went through a long censorship process, with major cuts and changes being demanded before its theatrical release.

Because of these issues, the film remained unreleased in theatres for years and eventually reached audiences as Satluj on OTT.

A film that was not only difficult to make, but also had to fight to tell its story.

That is what makes Satluj / Punjab ’95 a special part of my 30 Unusual Movies journey.

Badnam Basti (1971) एक ऐसी फिल्म थी जो अपने समय से बहुत आगे थी।

एक unusual और bold विषय पर बनी यह फिल्म लंबे समय तक लगभग भुला दी गई और इसे lost film माना जाता रहा। कई साल बाद इसका एक print Berlin के Arsenal Institute में मिला, जिसकी वजह से यह rare film दोबारा लोगों के सामने आ सकी।

यही वजह है कि Badnam Basti मेरी 30 Unusual Movies की list में खास जगह रखती है।

Aandhi (1975)

A Gulzar classic that became controversial because its lead character was compared to Indira Gandhi.

The film faced censorship, some scenes were reshot, and it was banned during the Emergency. It was finally released again in 1977.

One of the most unusual chapters in Indian cinema history.

कुछ फ़िल्में सिर्फ़ देखी नहीं जातीं, महसूस की जाती हैं।

“मैं वापस आऊँगा” ऐसी ही एक कहानी है, जो हमें याद दिलाती है कि घर सिर्फ़ एक जगह नहीं होता, बल्कि एक एहसास होता है, जो हमेशा हमारे भीतर ज़िंदा रहता है। कुछ रिश्ते, कुछ यादें और कुछ वादे वक्त के साथ धुंधले ज़रूर पड़ जाते हैं, लेकिन कभी पूरी तरह खत्म नहीं होते।

शायद इसलिए यह फिल्म सिर्फ़ लौटने की नहीं, बल्कि उस उम्मीद की कहानी है कि कुछ सफ़र चाहे जितने लंबे हों, उनका अंत हमेशा घर पर ही होता है।
