www.beautifulpurpose.com I paint what exists in my mind and the meaning it carries for me.

My art practice is rooted in the exploration and interpretation of my Cuban background. I left Cuba at 14-years old and was old enough to take with me the colors, the sounds and the beauty of my homeland and my people. Subconsciously or not, the subjects I paint and my color choices are deeply influenced by my longing for Cuba and my idealized memories of “home.” As someone said to my husband once

– “They took this girl out of Cuba, but they have never taken Cuba out of this girl.”
Being a self-taught and new artist, I don’t worry if a flower I paint doesn’t exist in nature, or if a face is not a perfect representation of real faces. My faces, for the most part, capture the Afro-Cuban beauty of Caribbean and Cuban women. When I branch out, I paint redheads, because I have a copper-haired daughter and painting red hair makes me think of her and brings me joy. Most of what I paint is invented and shaped by whom I am at my core - a Cuban woman, who is very American in many ways, but who will never forget where she came from and will always love that island 90 miles and 45-minutes by air from Key West. Because art for good is my mission, I donate a percentage of net profits to nonprofit organizations serving women and girls.

MY ART JOURNEY

At 65, in anticipation of retirement, I decided to learn how to watercolor. Not only is watercolor the hardest medium, in my opinion, but one must have at least rudimentary drawing skills, which I didn’t. I continued to take watercolor classes and took one basic drawing class, which helped a little, but my watercolors didn’t reflect how I felt about art. While searching the net for art instruction videos, I stumbled upon Tracy Verdugo, an Australian artist offering a course aptly named “Face Fascination.” This course changed my life, led me to my first art sales and helped me realize that faces were “my thing.”

I’m interested in people and their stories, so it is logical that faces resonate with me. I’m also a feminist and constantly see the power of women in their faces and eyes, so most of my work is focused on attempting to transfer that power onto the canvas. Whether creating a parody of a famous painting or developing an original piece, my goal is to showcase diversity, strength and beauty in all I paint.

Most of my pieces are mixed media on canvas. My Cuban and Spanish heritage, the work of friends in Africa and the beautiful women they help feed my wild imagination and influence the themes and colors in my work.

I have more to learn and many journeys to complete, but I find art an uplifting and worthwhile activity.
