Many moons ago at my favorite place, Emerald Coast Dragway. My first real win in Clifford. It was a 7.30 index race and the first time I ever sprayed Clifford with nitrous at the track.
It was an only little 150 shot on a 6.0 LS I had, or so I believe. To this day I’m honestly not sure because my buddy Austin Lee put the jets in and he never told me what they were lol. I can assure you whatever it was, it was a swift kick in the ass lol.
At the time, the truck had a little 4l65e and a converter that way way too tight on motor. But once it got a hit that N2O motivation, the thing really woke up. And when racers say nitrous is like a drug, commonly called “Dope”, they aren’t lying! Pressing that button, hearing the motor wake up, and the ole butt dyno getting re-assed in the seat is literally an irreplaceable feeling.
With this setup, I think we got the truck to run a respectable 7.23 or so on the bottle before we took it all off for the eventual turbo setup. I think we probably only sent 3-4 bottles total through the truck while we sprayed it, which is like a regular weekend occurrence for a lot of folks. A real drop in the bucket for most nitrous racers.
But even still, putting your whole race in the faith of that little red button waking up the grown man under the hood still sticks with me today. Even after having gone almost 2 full seconds faster now, which is an insane thought and experience in itself, the shakes I got the weekend these pictures were taken will never be forgotten.
My first hit of spray, first big win at the track, my family there with me, many, many friends around in the pits. This was a good weekend and I’m glad I stumbled across these pictures to relive it a little. Me and Austin being the final pair is definitely the cherry on top. He and I (mostly him) worked really hard on these two trucks and this was the payoff we both needed at the time.
Across the board, a core memory for me and a huge entry into my Dad lore.
