The “original” Mariachi Búhos de Oro came together during the fall of the year 2015 for the purpose of providing traditional mariachi music to KSU’s “Día de los Mu***os” event. After founding member Alejandro Sifuentes, spring 2015 KSU alumni, was given the details for the upcoming event earlier that semester, he began the efforts to research and put in motion the plans to deliver an authentic performance he could be proud of. This involved selecting and arranging the pieces, contacting the necessary musicians, and coordinating rehearsal and other logistics.
Through his passion for delivering musical excellence, Alex’s efforts resulted in a performance of such quality that a second event was booked immediately following the debut performance, both at the request and insistence of an audience member — and to the surprise of the mariachi. No plans for gig rates, availability, or performance lengths had even been discussed before.
Additional songs were then added to meet the demands for this new gig, and in this fashion the group continued to steadily grow; each ensuing gig brought a new challenge, and every success produced a new event. Soon the group found itself formalizing rehearsal guidelines, performance standards, and booking practices in accordance to the shifting vision for the group.
With this new level of authenticity, the Mariachi entered a new phase of professional development as it challenged its members to deliver an equally authentic musical experience to share with its community. In this manner, Mariachi Búhos de Oro began to develop their own brand and style through the year 2017 as they engaged in larger events, embarked on recording experiences, and pursued diverse avenues with which to share their carefully crafted mariachi experience.
Once again, the Mariachi’s network of supporters propelled them through this period of time to accomplish the group’s goals and allow it to continue growing, with the added bonus being that the increase in number and complexity of the group’s engagements required the streamlining of the organizations operations and practices in order to efficiently learn to deliver on its commitments.
The spring of 2018 followed as a period of post-holiday recuperation for the Mariachi, and after the much needed break the next phase of the group’s development became the focus of debate. A series of brainstorming sessions and planning meetings, along with the continued support of our sponsors and patrons, resulted in the next part of the adventure for the “Buhos.” Thanks once again for your support -- and stay tuned as the next part of the chapter unfolds!
