The Hula Girls

The Hula Girls over a decade of Tiki, rockabilly, and surf! Just when you thought tiki music had to be sleepy instrumental tunes, here come The Hula Girls!

The Hula Girls formed in 2008 and have been busy playing their self-described ‘hulabilly’ music all over Southern California. It’s up-tempo hapa haole, tiki, and surf themed music, all filtered through the late 1950’s and early 60’s rockabilly and rock n’ roll sound! The Hula Girls are Spike Marble on guitar and lead vocals, Shorty Poole on upright and electric basses, Gary Brandin on steel guitar

, and Doug Sanborn on drums! They are always accompanied by their hula-a-go-go dancers, Miss Haylee Holiday, Miss Ginger Watson, and Miss Veronica Velvet! The Hula Girls have played along side such modern rockabilly and surf legends as Dick Dale, The Ventures, Duane Eddie, X, The Knitters, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys, The Stray Cats' Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom, Dave Alvin, Southern Culture on the Skids, Los Straitjackets, Wayne the Train Hancock, and Hot Rod Lincoln, among many others. Their second album will be out, just in time for the Hukilau!

The Hula Girls are playing a rare Costa Mesa show tomorrow night! Come hang out. 🥃🍺🍹and I think the last time that we performed with Wayne the Train was like 15 years ago at Alex’s Bar. He wanted to give us money because we were doing the gig for free back then. Just one of my absolute favorites.

I’m in mourning. 😪

If you didn’t already see my IG reel, my band was rehearsing at my house today, and while playing a song that featured the baritone neck of my doubleneck, I guess we were loud enough to make the dishes rumble out of the cabinets and come crashing down onto this vintage 1953 Hula Girl chalkware piece.

The irony… I took the artwork off the wall SPECIFICALLY to protect it during rehearsal. And in the end, I killed it. 😭

I loved this piece SO much. I found it at an incredible estate sale in South Orange County about ten years ago. The whole sale was packed with vintage Hawaiiana, and I actually ran into tiki historian Sven Kirsten there. It was one of those truly unforgettable sales.

This was also one of those pieces I never took for granted. It hung right near my TV, so I looked at it all the time. And it absolutely kills me that this thing survived 73 years, only to be destroyed while it was in my care… even though I was literally going out of my way to protect it.

There were a few other casualties of our loud rock ’n’ roll…some atomic Franciscan Starburst plates and a vintage atomic plate I’ve had for probably 20 years.

At least nobody got hurt.

I guess. 🤷🏻‍♂️😑

These were literally some of my favorite things that I owned. 😪
See The Hula Girls on Wednesday in Costa Mesa at the Wayfarer with Wayne the Train. I’m gonna go throw up now.

Nooooooo… during my recent photoshoot with an actual mermaid, I backed up into one of my Tiki Diablo Home Depot tikis. 😪 I was too distracted by all of her flopping around.
But a little 2-part JB Weld and it is as good as… well… it’s fine, just don’t lift it by it’s head. I’m so thankful that it didn’t shatter when it hit the ground.

Well it finally happened. S**g and I have been buddies for a long time and we finally sat down for a two hour conversation. He even gave me his new book (which in hindsight, I should’ve had him sign 😂). Very excited to get this episode out to the world! Stay tuned.
