Attention is artivism.

Today, we turn our attention to Fidelio Ponce de León, one of the most singular and, I believe, least discussed figures of the Cuban Vanguardia.

In this visit to Cernuda Arte, Ramón Cernuda brings us closer to Ponce’s haunting masterpiece The Procession (La Procesión), circa 1944.

Across a vast and desolate landscape, a distant devotional procession moves almost like an apparition, fragile, solemn and suspended between the earthly and the spiritual.

Ponce’s paintings do not demand our attention through spectacle.

They draw us inward through their profound atmosphere of silence.

At a moment when vivid color often defined Cuban modernism, Ponce developed a language entirely his own. He called his luminous use of white pintura nacarada,mother-of-pearl painting, and embraced Kandinsky’s idea that white is a great silence filled with possibility.

Fidelio Ponce died in 1949, but his work should be central to conversations about around the Cuban masters and his paintings deserve to be encountered alongside the most important expressions of twentieth-century modernism.

His work is currently on view at Cernuda Arte and at the Frost Art Museum at FIU in Modern Cuban Painters from Havana to New York Revisited.

Artists do not disappear only when their works are lost. They also disappear when we stop looking.

Let us look again.

Is it an acquisition story or an ancestral one?  You tell me...

A morning tour at Cernuda Arte with M. Carreño’s “La Costurera”

So many of these stories relate to back to the exile experience, and yes, we had no furniture.

Happy Summer to all my students and friends of the studio and gallery.

Paris, 1789 meets Havana, 1930s.

Bastille Day isn’t just about France; it’s about the universal struggle to tear down the old order and build something new.

You can’t paint a Republic overnight.

This Bastille Day, I’d like to celebrate this work that so tenderly embodies ideals of Cuban Republic in the 20th century, and is on view at Lowe in the University of Miami.

Uver Solis, an important Afro-Cuban female painter, rarely seen or discussed, is live at Lowe Museum in Miami. My favorite instructor, Nercys Cernuda of Cernuda Arte, gives us a window into her work. Every month is women’s history month at GG Art Space.

Did you hear the one about Vicente Escobar?

Some stories remain hidden unless we insist…

A beautiful summer moment at the Lowe Museum, with Ramón Cernuda, founder of Cernuda Arte, leading a group through El Pasado Mío, curated by Prof. Alejandro de la Fuente.

We hope you had a wonderful Fathers’ Day, Juneteenth, and and a restful start to your summer. ☀️

Nothing but grateful! 🌴 Thanks to everyone who came out to spend some time with Alberto and that one guitar, and especially to our students and studio family because that’s what you are. Here’s a tiny clip of one of Alberto’s original Cuban etudes for guitar.

The beat goes on! We’ll see you at the next show.

Curios about Afro-Cuban Art? Come see this exhibition curated by Prof Alejandro de la Fuente at Lowe in the University of Miami . As a family, we are ever searching for a stronger understanding of our own past, and making things just a little bit better as we go. Hoping this new research travels the country one day, and reaches all of our people. It may be a long line, but we are in it.

Slice of Alberto’s new work “Gigi” for solo guitar. 🍰 🎶 Happy Easter to all our colleagues and friends. 🐣
