Axolotl Snaxalotl!

Even though they look sweet and friendly, axolotls are actually carnivores. They eat all kinds of aquatic invertebrates, fish, and even other amphibians. If they are in crowded conditions, baby axolotls will even snack on their siblings arms and legs!

Not a big deal though, they can regrow lost limbs!

Eating your greens is important for all of us, but especially for our lizards and tortoises! All of our plant-eating reptiles get plenty of collard, mustard, and turnip greens, along with occasional treats grown here at the zoo, like squash flowers, hibiscus, and nasturtium blossoms.

They don’t seem to enjoy ranch dressing though.

Zinnia the leopard tortoise is the oldest animal at The Learning Zoo!

But how old is she??

Although we don’t know exactly when or where she was born, we do know that she was living at a zoo in South Carolina until the mid 1990s, when she was given to a private owner. He brought her to Florida and later Texas with him, before donating her to us in 2020.
Based on her earlier history it is very likely that she was born in Africa, and is at least 35 and possibly even older!
