Taking a break from cooking with greens Laura made Oatmeal Favorites for !

Check out Rose Levy Beranbaum’s 2022 The Cookie Bible for foolproof directions and delicious results on so many kinds of cookies: https://find.minlib.net/iii/encore/record/C__Rb4024858
Visit her website: https://www.realbakingwithrose.com/

Laura writes:
A Rose Levy Beranbaum recipe leaves nothing to chance with clear directions for every step in the process, and the results are consistently good! Before I got to page 10 of The Cookie Bible from 2022, I was toasting 50 g of walnuts for Oatmeal Favorites. I love that provides details like how long to preheat the oven, where to set the rack and how big to make each cookie. Metric measurements are provided for every ingredient, including liquids. She often explains the reasoning behind her instructions. For example, it is important to rest the batter in this recipe for at least thirty minutes before shaping the cookies so that the oats can absorb some moisture and soften. This oatmeal cookie recipe just uses brown sugar and not much, but the cookies are perfectly sweet with raisins and dark chocolate chips (52% to 63% cacao). Beranbaum indicated that the cookies can be stored at room temperature for two weeks, but we didn’t have any cookies left to store and next time will be making a double batch. We followed her suggestion to eat them while still slightly warm and thought she would approve of our idea to serve them with vanilla ice cream!

These gorgeous Kids' Bags were created in the new teen area at the Concord Free Public Library with 7th & 8th grade campers from The Umbrella Arts Center . Our Volunteer Community Co-ordinator Rebecca Snyder spent some time discussing food insecurity with the campers, who were engaged and thoughtful in the discussion before creating their Kids' Bags works of art! We are grateful to have developed this partnership with the Children's/Teen library. Special thanks to Cary Stough who organized this event with The Umbrella. We love to see these young people involved in spreading !
The entire CCC staff came together this morning as part of work week for group professional development at the Concord Free Public Library. Teachers and staff enjoyed bagels and coffee on the lawn before moving inside to meet new staff, hear start of school updates from Executive Director Pat Nelson, and do a True Colors personality test and then discuss the results as a group. The morning ended with a very special treat: a presentation from CCC co-founder Christine Gerzon on the past, present and future of CCC. Our sincere thanks to the Concord Free Public Library for donating the morning in the beautiful Goodwin Forum to CCC. A great start to the new school year!

If you’re interested in some insightful summer reading, the Fowler Branch of the Concord Free Public Library is hosting a book club on July 21 with our friends at Open Table. They’ll be discussing Qian Julie Wang's memoir, Beautiful Country, with particular focus on food insecurity here in the United States.

Wang, who is now a civil rights lawyer, has said she hoped that by sharing her childhood stories of being an undocumented immigrant in Brooklyn in the 1990s, "others like us would know they were not alone, that they could survive."

Copies of the book are available to borrow at the Fowler Branch desk.
