Roger Nadrchal’s Sweet Foliage is a remarkable example of the patience, skill, and artistry that define his woodcarving. Carved from basswood, the piece captures a tender moment between a mother giraffe and her calf, transforming a simple block of wood into a scene filled with life and movement.

The beauty of this sculpture lies in its extraordinary attention to detail. Every pattern on the giraffes’ coats has been carefully carved and painted, creating the realistic markings that make the animals instantly recognizable. The subtle contours of the muscles, the graceful curves of their long necks, and the delicate shaping of the ears and faces demonstrate Roger’s deep understanding of wildlife anatomy. His study of animals and commitment to realism are evident in every inch of the piece.

A special thank you to the Columbus Area Arts Council (1981–2024) for their sponsorship of “Song of the Sandhill” created by Sondra Jonson of Cambridge, Nebraska.

While the Columbus Area Arts Council is no longer in existence, we are incredibly grateful for their commitment to the arts and the important role they played in helping the Columbus Sculpture Walk get off the ground. Their support helped lay the foundation for bringing public art to the Trackside District and creating opportunities for residents and visitors to experience creativity and culture in downtown Columbus.

We appreciate their lasting impact on our community and their dedication to supporting the arts throughout the years. Be sure to take a walk through downtown and discover the sculptures that continue to make Columbus a vibrant place to explore and enjoy.
