Meet Margaret Eriksen, another one of participating artists in this Saturday's Art on the Canal Art Stroll.

MARGARET SHARRAD ERIKSEN...was born in England a LONG time ago. Instead of previous plans to attend Art School she decided to work on setting the world right, but as you can tell, that didn't work out! She came to the States for a YEAR (in1964!) as a Nanny, then went back to school and graduated from Marshall University with AB and MA degrees in Art & Art Education. She taught in Huntington, WV and later moved to Columbus with her husband and continued to teach art in Columbus Schools - the last 15 years of which were at Wedgewood Middle School.

After retiring, wanting to concentrate on her own art. Her work has been included in several Art Strolls, the most recent of which was at Nate Doerfler's Loose Rail last year. She has participated in numerous shows throughout central Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, and won a scattering of awards. She has work hanging in private displays in Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and England.

Margaret's ceramic sculptures are painted with acrylics, which she also uses in most of her two dimensional art - on paper and canvas. She often thins the acrylic down to a watercolor consistency, enjoying the interplay of shapes and color and the subtle effects to be achieved with layers of paint. Her quirky sense of humor will sometimes show through in the unexpected twists in some of her pieces.

Kelsey Tosca, a Barista, Freelance Artist
and Ashville native, studied fine arts at Otterbein University.

While Graphic Design provides a lot of opportunity for unique work, I have found photography to be one of the best ways to bridge communication between people. In 2015 I spent a year abroad in 13 countries doing humanitarian work. Through that time I was able to broaden my perceptions of culture, and humanity as a whole. I want my work to personally connect with people on some level and experience what I was seeing/feeling in the moment.

A large portion of my artistic experience existed using the brush, oils and canvas. I participated in many art shows and exhibitions as a 'painter'. However, my love and interest in pottery was ever present. In 2005 when the opportunity to enroll in a class on beginners wheel throwing, I jumped at the chance.

After two wheel throwing classes, I realized that intensive practice was needed to hone my skills. I purchased my wheel and a medium sized electric kiln and have been enjoying this creative experience ever since.

Clay Nest Pottery ceramics are a combination of the influences of my former years as a painter and my love of nature. My vessels provide a ceramic interpretation of the natural world and the flowers and the creatures that live there.

I like to take bits and pieces of nature, magnifying some an diminishing others and assemble them into a vessel worthy of use and giving whimsical pleasure.

Designed for everyday use, it will still last for generations with proper care and handling.

I hope that my love of this medium and the connection to nature comes through in my work.
