I drew this for my lovely bride, of my father-in-law after his passing in 2018.

I was so proud of myself for taking the reference photo, because it captured "PeePaw's" essence prefectly! Then I looked at the original image, and I was in it! 🙄

So thank you Ava Robinson for lending your photographic brilliance that I simply do not possess, and capturing this moment at Freeman Farms many moons ago. I knew I didn't have the skills or the timing to grab this moment. 😘

This one was a challenge, working from two different reference photos with two different light sources. And labradoodles have this amazing fur that is difficult to capture in grayscale.

Thank you Taylor and for the commission!

I usually don't draw every hair. I don't have the patience or the discipline. I was really struggling on this one, so after reworking the muzzle a half dozen times, I sort of did just that.

The first image is white balanced for better social media presentation. The full and closeup are closer to the natural color of the paper, and reveal the sometimes frustrating temperature shift of white charcoal (cool), and black charcoal (warm). Still trying to figure that one out.

Thank you Scott Brooks for the commission! It was an honor and it's always a treat to draw for a fellow artist, especially one as skilled as you!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I've always wanted to draw him. What an incredible man and what a gift he had with words.

The threats to his life were mounting. And this time the threats were very real, he knew it, and he travelled to Memphis, because it is where the people needed him.

I chose this image from a collection of the Martin Luther King family archive, it was the last speech he ever gave famously known as the "I've been to the Mountain Top" on April 3rd 1968. One day later he would be killed. I chose this image because it represents where he was at that time in his life. Though he was only 39, his weariness was beginning to show. Even his cadence was calm, although poetic and mesmerizing. Until the last few paragraphs, you could see him light up with a fierce defiance, literally eulogizing himself and at the same time telling the people and the movement to keep moving forward, in a way only he could...

"And then I got into Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers?
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now, because I've been to the mountaintop.

And I don't mind.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!”

He wasn’t angry at what he called “his sick white brothers.” They were still his brothers. He spoke with diplomacy, grace, class and strength.

What moved me most, if you watch the video, is on the last word of the speech, he almost collapses into the arms of his friends, as if that speech was meant to be his last, and he gave it everything he had.
