Hand Dyed Layered Paper

In this ongoing series, I layer pieces of paper and fuse them together to form a three-dimensional whole. I begin by painting and printing open fields of color onto individual pieces of paper, which I then randomly glue together, creating layers that I tear into by hand. As I tear into the piece, color combinations emerge, creating a spontaneous composition derived from a subtractive process. The tearing allows indentations or negative space to form, which become the focal points. My pieces emulate the effects of a weathering process, paralleling subtle everyday shifts such as peeling paint or cracked sidewalks. The small fractures found in everyday life insert the human presence into the larger landscape, suggesting a vulnerability that is akin to an ever-changing environment.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Hyde Park Art Center, Evanston Art Center, Toledo Museum of Art, Art Prize, Art Miami, Steven Zevitas Gallery, Fiber Arts International, the Columbus Museum of Art, and coGalleries (Berlin, Germany). Recent exhibitions include her first solo museum exhibition, Neon Speed, at the Textil und Rennsport Museum, Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany and Pieced+Painted, a two-person exhibition with Galen Cheney at the Haggerty Gallery, University of Dallas. Upcoming exhibitions include a collaborative installation at the Akron Art Museum with Natalie Lanese, solo exhibition at Galerie C.O.A. in Montreal and a solo exhibition at the Springfield Museum of Art.

Andrea was one of five 2011 Efroymson Fellowship recipients and has also been awarded artist’s grants from the City of Chicago, the Ohio Arts Council and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. She has works in the collections of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Omaha Children’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Chase Bank, Capital One, Dayton Metro Libraries and Facebook Corporate Offices in Chicago. She is represented by Hammond Harkins Galleries in Columbus, OH, Galerie C.O.A. in Montreal, GUT Gallery in Dallas, TX, K Imperial Fine Art in San Francisco, McCormick Gallery in Chicago, IL and Galerie Klaus Braun in Stuttgart, Germany. She received her BFA in Printmedia in 2002 and her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies in 2006 both from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
