Honoring the Legacy Behind the Name: Eliot & Muriel Battle

When you hear "The Eliot & Muriel Battle Dance Showcase," we want you to know the remarkable people whose names our event is honored to carry.

Eliot and Muriel Battle weren't simply educators. They were trailblazers, community leaders, and partners in creating change in Columbia.

Eliot and Muriel Battle were natives of Mobile, Alabama, whose journey eventually brought them to Columbia, Missouri, in 1956 and became instrumental figures during the integration of Columbia Public Schools. Together, they helped our community navigate a pivotal period in its history while dedicating their lives to education and creating opportunities for young people.

Their impact extended far beyond the classroom. Their commitment to education, equality, service, and community touched generations, and a legacy that continues today through the schools that proudly carry their names: Eliot Battle Elementary School and Muriel Battle High School.

Our showcase was created to celebrate the very things their lives represented: YOUTH. EDUCATION. COMMUNITY. OPPORTUNITY. UNITY.

And through the art of dance, we get to give another generation of young people a place to be seen, celebrated, encouraged, and reminded that what they do today can leave an impact long after them.

This is more than a dance showcase. It's about legacy. 👑
