Resident Arts provides professional development opportunities for artists to cultivate the arts locally and broaden the horizons of artists, nationally.
Resident Arts is a 501c3 whose mission is to provide professional development opportunities for artists at every level of their career to develop the arts locally and broaden the horizons of local artists, nationally. Our programs engage young (teen), emerging, and professional artists in educational activities which bolster Mid-Missouri’s creative workforce, encourage innovative critical thinking
, and introduce working artists to available resources. We aim to help artists create sustainable careers right here in Mid-Missouri. Our primary programs include the After-school Teen Artist Residency, the Emerging Artist Residency, the Professional Development Workshop Series, an Exhibition and Artist Talk Series, Free Career Coaching, and Co-operative Studio Access. Resident Arts is a nonprofit organization and gallery
History of Resident Arts
Resident Arts was founded in July 2014 and received it’s 501 (c) 3 status as a tax exempt nonprofit in May 2015. But long before 2014, Resident Arts was being conceived by founder and director, Madeleine LeMieux. LeMieux first had a taste of organizing artists and helping them realize their professional goals in 2004. From that point forward she knew that her life’s work would be dedicated to doing just that. Since the beginning of 2015, operating out of Orr Street Studios in the North Village Arts District in Columbia, MO, Resident Arts has been piloting and running programming to help young, emerging, and professional artists build careers right here in Mid-Missouri. Our programs achieve that goal by: providing mentoring and art-making opportunities for teens in our After-school Teen Artist Residency; offering a unique Emerging Artist Residency for local emerging artists that aids the artist in the creation of a large-scale work or body of small works and provides a stipend and materials, over the course of three months; offering workshops as part of our Professional Development Workshop Series that are designed to help artists solve practical problems relating to running their arts practice as a business. In 2016, we moved to a new space down the street from Orr Street Studios, building our Exhibition and Artist Talk Series and providing new resources and opportunities for local artists to build their businesses. http://residentarts.org/

**Resident Arts was born 5 years ago this fall!**
On the eve our fifth birthday, we also have some news. In 2020, we will be subletting our current space and (temporarily) taking up residence in some other local businesses, to save on overhead as we take a strategic year to build our board of directors and diversify funding.
Most of our programs will still run - the After-school Program out of the Columbia Art League, the workshops out of Unwind Studios, and the exhibition series out of Balsamo Warehouse. The Emerging Artist Residency will be placed on hold for 2020, as will the rentable photo studio, and career coaching, with plans to return in 2021.
If you are wondering how you can support our mission in this transition:
1) We are looking for a subletter starting Feb 1, 2020. We have a few people interested already, but send anyone interested our way.
2) If you've been thinking about a meaningful way to get involved - we're looking to bolster our board of directors - shoot us a message. This is a great time to join to help lead the charge in securing our future.
3) Come party with us! We will be releasing information for Resident Arts' 5th Birthday Bash fundraiser, shortly. It's going to be a great time, so buy tickets, buy art, come eat and drink and dance and celebrate a great first five years as we turn our efforts toward the next!
Thank you all for your ongoing support!
