See a difference? After scanning 7,000+ images for our free online digital archive, anomalies begin to stand out. Subjects sitting for portraits taken by Henry Holborn and Wesley Blackmore can look very different from frame to frame.
The reason is retouching!
While it may seem surprising, the practice of cleaning up a subject’s appearance was commonplace, even before modern-day computer software.
The tedious process involved a designated retouching desk and an easel where the photographer or “retoucher” would scrape the emulsion side of the negative with an etching knife to remove wrinkles, acne, freckles, and other physical “imperfections” according to prevailing standards of beauty.
Retouching is very evident in a double portrait, like this one. You can also see the correction lines from the etching pen / knife directly on the emulsion.
By the time the practice of retouching became more widely known, customers would often request to have their image retouched. Thus, our vast collection of 500,000+ glass plate and plasticine negatives is ripe with examples of how these alterations made the subjects’ “imperfections” disappear.
So, whether it is 1921 or 2021, appearance mattered—especially in the lasting images of a loved one that could cost as much as $1-5 (which would be $30-135 today with inflation).

Here's a group of Alpha Chi Sigma - Delta Chapter Mizzou - a professional chemistry fraternity - members in Mizzou's 1923 Savitar Yearbook. Always interesting to note the range of personalities in old group photos: Bored, calm, shy, serious, tough (or frustrated with the photography process!).
Most people say that people didn't smile much in old photos because of how long photo exposures took back then, but that's not necessarily the case. Experts cite a few potential alternatives, but the simplest explanation could be the most compelling: It just wasn't socially normal to smile in front of a camera yet. Early Kodak advertisements since 1888 gradually made it normal to show our pearly whites for the camera. 📸
What do you think??

Of course, Columbia is the heart of Boone County, but did you know its interesting origins? The story begins with the settlement of American pioneers from Kentucky and Virginia in an early 1800s region known as the Boonslick. Columbia was initially founded as Smithton (Smithton Middle School, anyone?) in 1819 on a site about a half-mile west of the present Boone County Courthouse on Walnut Street. This location ended up being too far from needed water supplies, and springs were discovered across the Flat Branch Creek. So in 1821, the town moved east and was renamed Columbia - a historical name for the United States.

Dr. King's words have a potent relevance for today: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we honor the towering legacy he left for the civil rights movement, guiding dialogue we continue to have to this day.
How has Dr. King impacted your life? Any memories of hearing his speeches?
By now you probably know about our massive collection of Boone County photography (some of which is online for you to see whenever you want!). Our Boone County Court Records collection starts from 1821 – The same year Missouri became a state, and a year after Boone County became...Boone County.
So if you want to experience some of our county's earliest history, take a look! It's full of interesting finds.
For example, you'll notice that Roger N. Todd, clerk of the circuit court, made a claim for $43 for books to furnish his office. And the court refused the claim.
Also notice the incredible penmanship of Boone County's court clerk. We're not sure if most court clerks in that era had comparable skill, or we just got lucky. 😉

It's time for our sixth annual, Summer Give! This is our mid-year fundraiser to help get our organization through the summer months and into fall. As many of you know since closing mid-March we have not gained any of the usual income from events, merchandise, or our usual activities, so this fundraiser is extremely important to help us continue preserving our history! We use these donations to maintain operations, support our current and new exhibits, and meet facility needs!
Last year over $25,970 was raised; our goal this year is $35,000! If local history, art and culture matter to you, please consider donating—every dollar counts!
