Toolshed Toolshed gathers and shares tools for an equitable, livable future. Toolshed comes to life through multiple modes of sharing.

An emerging worldview built on ecological thinking—seeing all as interrelated, all as kin—gives us the transformational means to address the climate crisis now. Toolshed brings together practitioners actively engaged in transformational change—cross-pollinating, supporting and broadcasting their projects, while gathering essential tools useful to all—to provide the means to build an ecological cul

ture. These include the Toolshed Garden and leadership program, onsite exhibitions, sponsored artworks, workshops, skill shares, meetings, talks and retreats at Basilica Hudson, as well as through media podcasts, films, an interactive website with frequent new content, and a biennial publication consistent with our belief that images, poems and design can also serve as tools for environmental transformation. Because ecological thinking combined with effective political action starts with rootedness in the uniqueness of each place, Toolshed focuses on the bio-region of the Hudson Valley, with a special emphasis on the area in and around the City of Hudson. Situated between a rural, agricultural economy, and a more urban, creative economy, and featuring a diversity of socio-economic and cultural populations, Hudson has established itself as a leader in environmental innovation. Basilica Hudson, a major cultural institution in the Hudson Valley, serves as Toolshed’s primary partner, with its developing net-zero, green campus providing the ideal home for our work.

Our shelf building Intro to Power Tools workshop was a big success! Participants ranged in age from 9 to 65 for a truly intergenerational group who learned wood-shop safety, best practices, and tangible skills as they constructed their own set of floating shelves. Huge thanks to everyone who joined us! We loved seeing everyone learn, laugh, and leave with something they made with their own hands.

Every time we choose to build instead of buy, we strengthen both our skills and our ecosystems. This workshop was a hands-on reminder that sustainable living starts with simple actions and sharing knowledge. We are grateful for this community of makers and excited to offer more workshops in the future. What do you wanna learn or build?

Taught by .angela in partnership with .hudson.

Raising baby chicks is a practical crash course in ecology, and we visited newest farmer to meet their 500 (!!) babies. 🐣 They grow and fast and furiously, and their needs mirror the balance all living systems require. Here are 5 tips to raise chicks that make the difference:
1️⃣ Warmth & Safety — For the first week, chicks need temps around 95°F in a draft-free brooder. Lower the heat by about 5°F each week until they’re fully feathered. A red heat lamp or plate keeps them warm without stressing their natural rhythms.
2️⃣ Clean, Fresh Water — Chicks tip over dishes easily, so use a shallow chick waterer and refresh it daily. Adding marbles or stones prevents accidental drowning. Just like ecosystems, water quality is everything.
3️⃣ Nutritious Starter Feed — Begin with a 20–24% protein chick starter crumble (medicated if needed to prevent coccidiosis). Healthy inputs = healthy growth, whether for chicks or communities.
4️⃣ Adequate Space — Plan for at least ½ sq. ft. per chick at first, expanding as they grow. Overcrowding leads to stress, pecking, and disease—an ecological reminder that balance prevents breakdown.
5️⃣ Daily Observation — Spend a few minutes each day watching their behavior. Are they huddling under the heat source (too cold) or scattering to the edges (too hot)? Do they look bright-eyed and active? Noticing subtle shifts helps prevent bigger issues—just like in our broader environments.
These simple practices show how small, consistent acts of care ripple out into thriving systems. 🌱 Have you tried raising chicks—or are you curious to start?

Lessons from the Lily Pad: 🪷 Floating gently on ponds and lakes, lily pads might appear as simple ornaments, but they hold deep ecological wisdom. Rooted in the mud below yet spread wide on the surface, they bridge air and water ecosystems, reminding us that no life form exists in isolation.

Lily pads create microhabitats. Their broad leaves shade and cool the water, offering refuge for fish and amphibians while controlling algae growth. Frogs leap across them, dragonflies perch before hunting, and insects nest on their undersides. In this way, one plant becomes an architect of a complex, interdependent community.

Yet lily pads also teach caution. In certain conditions, they can proliferate so densely that they block oxygen and suffocate life below. Growth without balance destabilizes the very system it depends on. Ecology thrives not through dominance but through coexistence.

Their seasonal rhythms offer another lesson. Lily pads bloom in summer, die back in winter, and return with the thaw, showing us that cycles of growth, loss, and renewal sustain life. They embody resilience, with waxy leaves that repel water and stems that flex with changing conditions, a quiet model of adaptation in shifting environments.

Beneath their beauty lies a profound message: ecosystems are built on hidden foundations, fragile balances, and ongoing cycles. By observing lily pads, we are reminded to value connection, adaptability, and reciprocity. The pond is not whole without its lily pads, and our world is not whole without ecological awareness rooted in respect.
