Behind the Work | The Machine Ghost in the Human Shell

From May 8 to August 30, 2026, Thai artist Kawita Vatanajyankur presents her first solo exhibition in China, Memory Machine, at Yuz Museum.

The Machine Ghost in the Human Shell (2024) is part of Kawita Vatanajyankur’s Cyber Labour series, created in collaboration with Pat Pataranutaporn, a researcher at the MIT Media Lab. The series centers on questions surrounding the “humanized machine” and the “machinized human.”

During the making of The Machine Ghost in the Human Shell, Vatanajyankur used her own body as an experimental site. Under the dual guidance of artificial intelligence over both mind and body, she became a performing puppet controlled by these unfamiliar “ghosts.” Electrodes connected to her joints, driven by an AI-controlled electrical muscle stimulation system, recreated AI-generated movement patterns through a transparent wire.

Time has never belonged to anyone.

In Everything is on time, only time was never ours., Liu Ren and Zhang Ruyi reflect on a paradox of modernity: in the rhythm of the contemporary city, individuals strive to remain perfectly aligned with time, yet constantly experience a distance from it and their own “absence.”

Perhaps every moment of “punctuality” or “deviation” becomes an opportunity to recognize the fractures and turning points in our lives.

Memory Machine has officially opened at Yuz Project Space of Art

At the exhibition, Thai artist Kawita Vatanajyankur shares a practice that moves from objectified labour to human-machine symbiosis and the awakening of consciousness. Through her own body, she reflects on invisible labour, gendered expectations, and the structural imbalances often hidden beneath everyday life.

We were honored to welcome Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani on her first visit to Yuz Museum on March 29, marked by an intimate outdoor luncheon and a thoughtful exchange on the evolving cultural dialogue between China and Qatar, enriched by Her Excellency’s openness, generosity of ideas, and a deep commitment to culture and education.

Her visit coincides with Everything is on time, only time was never ours by Liu Ren and Zhang Ruyi, and reflects the ongoing collaboration between Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Yuz Museum, and Qatar Museums, grounded in dialogue, exchange, and long-term connection

The works of Liu Ren and Zhang Ruyi respond to the order and disjunctions produced by modernity, while revealing the subtle emotional structures and material flows of urban life. Within shared spatial and temporal dimensions, their practices remain independent yet in close dialogue. Beneath the seemingly orderly grid of the city, minute, fragile, and temporary presences become coordinates for navigating contemporary life.

Walking forward, walking backward — it is all time.

Both Liu and Zhang were born in Shanghai, where they grew up and continue to live and work. Their works are deeply rooted in everyday experience and perception. Each artist sensitively captures fragments and subtle textures of urban development, social systems, and historical events. In Everything is on time, only time was never ours., their works form an open field for observing how individuals respond to and reflect on their own existence within modern cities.
