Have you ever read a book that made you want to visit a place… or perhaps even become a better person?

That’s exactly what Theo of Golden by Allen Levi did for me.

When a hurricane changed our anniversary plans, Jim and I found ourselves wandering through Columbus, Georgia, the real-life inspiration for the fictional town of Golden.

From the coffee shop and charcoal portraits to the fountain, riverfront, and familiar landmarks, it was such a treat to see the pages of a book come to life.

But what stayed with me most wasn't the places. It was the reminder to slow down, pay attention, and truly notice the people around us. To be a little more humble, a little more thoughtful, and a little more loving.

And wouldn't you know, a small encounter in the coffee shop brought that message full circle.

This week's Journal, “When the Pages Become Places,” is about unexpected detours, the stories that stay with us, and the beauty of noticing others.

I'll share the link in the comments.

Now I'd love to hear from you! Has a book ever inspired you to visit a place, see the world differently, or make a change in your own life? I'd love to know which book and why.

The newest issue of The Turquoise Iris Journal is getting ready to make its way into the world, and inside I’m sharing a little more about what becoming has looked like for me.

The stretching.
The changing.
The creating.
The remembering.

And the beautiful realization that perhaps we are never really finished… we are embracing who we are… who we’ve always been.

We are always becoming… allowing our many facets to shine.

I’m grateful to have another story tucked between these pages. 💙

We spend a lot of time talking about who we’re becoming.

The next version.
The braver version.
The more successful version.
The one who finally has it figured out.

Porsha Chalmers of The Silver Bohemian offers a different perspective inside EMBODY:
“Becoming was never about arriving.”
There is no finish line where we suddenly become the woman we were working toward.

We’re living it now.
Through the choices we make. The things we create. The stories we carry. The parts of ourselves we stop apologizing for. The courage to change our minds. And the freedom to let all of those pieces belong.

Porsha’s story inside Volume 25 is about trusting her own voice and embracing the whole woman she already is.
And isn't that a much more interesting way to think about becoming?

Not “Am I there yet?”
But “Am I living like myself?”

Read Porsha’s story in Volume 25. Subscribe now. Read slowly. Keep forever.

Where the Story Went Next: Karrie’s Story 🤍

Sometimes the things we hold onto aren't really things at all.
When I asked Karrie what stayed with her after reading Tattered & Mended, she chose two chapters: “We Are All Made of Stars” and “Holding Memories.”

She then told me about a small purse from the 1920s that belonged to her great-grandmother.

She wrote:
“You can hold a piece of the past in your hands and feel the love that went into the piece.”

I understand that feeling so deeply.

It's one of the reasons I'm drawn to old fabric, worn furniture, handwritten notes, photographs, jewelry, quilts, and all those seemingly ordinary things that have passed through someone else's hands before reaching ours.
Sometimes an object becomes a bridge.

It connects us to someone who came before us. To a moment we don't want to forget. To a story we may not even have been present for, yet somehow still belongs to us.

Karrie ended her reflection with something beautifully simple:

“Symbols are everywhere if we just look for them.”

Maybe that's part of what Tattered & Mended has taught me too.

Pay attention.

Look a little closer.

Ask about the old purse tucked away in the drawer. Turn over the photograph and read what's written on the back. Learn who stitched the quilt. Listen when someone tells you why they've kept something for all these years.

Because sometimes what looks like an ordinary object is quietly carrying generations of love.

Karrie, thank you for reminding me that memory can have texture, weight, history and even something we can hold in the palm of our hand.
Six months later, these stories are still finding their way into other stories.

And the ripples continue. 🤍

If you watched the live, I mentioned about those who are in your orbit ... the "stars" in your constellation. I've realized more as time passes, the more important this has become to me. I'll post the link for that journal entry in the comments.
