She Scores wraps up this season's composer features with Yi Yao. Come hear her music and that of thirty other amazing composers from May 30th - June 2nd!

Yi Yao (b. 1997) is a Chinese composer currently based in Cincinnati. Many of her compositions are dedicated to using music to express thoughts on our relationship with nature and society to the world, as well as using sound as a medium of understanding the world. Her compositional idiom is profoundly informed by her Chinese heritage which serves as a unique connecting thread between her and the listeners.

Yao’s compositions have been performed in China and the United States. Some musicians and performing organizations she has worked with include the Hub New Music, ZHENG string quartet, Eighth Blackbird’s member, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, NEC Philharmonia Orchestra, NEC Wind Ensemble, Guangzhou Zhuying Symphony Orchestra.

For composition studies, Yao received her Bachelor’s degree at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China, Master's degree at the New England Conservatory. Currently, she is a DMA student in composition at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music under the supervision of Mara Helmuth.

Her featured work is "An Eclipse of Searing Whisper" for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello.

Performances for She Scores begin tomorrow, and our final social-media-featured performer is Tyler Young!

Young is an active recording engineer, producer, saxophonist and teacher living in Lansing, Michigan. Recent projects include lead engineer and producer on an album by pianist Chen Wang released on Ivory Classics and co-producer for Branford Marsalis and the Virginia Symphony through Arts Laureate. Young is professor of saxophone at Alma College in Alma, Michigan and is the baritone chair with the multi-award winning saxophone quartet Sound Session.

Two more days 'til opening night of She Scores 2024! One of our featured composers is Mickie Wadsworth.

Mickie Wadsworth is a soprano and composer based in Upstate New York. Their work has been programmed at conferences and festivals such as; SEAMUS, EMM, NYCEMF, SCI National (online), SCI Region V, Research on Contemporary Composition, SheScores, Manchester New Music Festival, Ball State New Music Fest, Napoleon Electronic Media Festival, and Boneyfiddle Fringe Festival. They have participated in several workshops and summer programs including Quince Institute (2023), SPLICE Institute (2023, 2022), N.E.O. Voice Festival (2021), and Art Song Lab (2020).

Mickie is currently pursuing their M.M. in Instrumental Conducting (Wind Track) at Ohio University. They received their M.M. in Music Composition from Ohio University in 2023 where they studied with Dr. Robert McClure. Outside of composing, Mickie enjoy hanging out with their cat Norma, and hiking in the Adirondacks.

She Scores welcomes back Frank Wiley, who is active as a composer, conductor, visual artist, and teacher.

He is an emeritus faculty member of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music at Kent State University, where he taught courses in composition, music theory, and music history. He was Co-Director and Conductor of the Kent State University New Music Ensemble, which he founded in 1979. For 14 years he also served as Director of the Kent State University Orchestra. He is a winner of the Kent State University Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Wiley joined the faculty of Kent State University in 1979, after teaching at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington from 1976 to 1979. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and the Far East, by numerous soloists and ensembles. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards for his work as a composer. His music is recorded on AMP Recordings, Albany Records, Centaur Records, Truemedia Records, Peppermint Records, and Kentuckiana Recordings.

Dr. Wiley is active as a conductor of chamber, orchestral, vocal, and choral ensembles, with an emphasis on new music. Other areas of expertise include early music and opera. He is Director of Music at the United Methodist Church of Kent, Ohio.
He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Organ Performance and his Master of Music degree in Composition at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he studied organ with Rudolph Kremer and composition with Roger Hannay. His holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University, where his principal teacher was Donald Erb. He also studied orchestral conducting with Thomas Briccetti.

Dr. Wiley will conduct “Miss Minutes” by Gala Flagello, and “Network” by Eunji Lee.

She Scores 2024 flutist Linda White returns this season!

A dynamic and versatile musician, flutist Linda White excels in an array of musical styles and plays the entire spectrum of flutes from the piccolo down to the contrabass flute. She regularly performs with classical guitarist Robert Gruca as part of the Gruca White Ensemble. Comfortable with both written and improvised forms, this duo stretches the boundaries of the standard classical concert with their improvisations and arrangements of rock, funk and Latin tunes. In 2020, the Gruca White Ensemble released their debut recording, A Different Take, through PARMA Recordings Big Round label.

Linda is a founding member of the Blue Water Chamber Orchestra, and has also performed with The Cleveland Pops, The Cleveland Opera Orchestra, The Akron Symphony, The Canton Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, and The New World Symphony. An avid chamber musician and champion of contemporary music, Linda regularly collaborates with the composers of The Cleveland Composers Guild and performs their pieces at venues throughout the Great Lakes region.

An engaging teacher, Linda teaches at The Music Settlement, where she has students of all ages and abilities, and, along with her colleague Jane Berkner, directs two flute choirs. Linda received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming, then moved to Ohio and earned her Master of Music degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Jeffrey Khaner.

Linda will perform "Thirteen Ways" by Erin Busch, and "Nostalgia" by Elizabeth Start.

Our final featured weekend composer for the 2024 She Scores series is Mengxue Tan!

Mengxue Tan started to play the piano and Guzheng at the age of five. Mengxue finished her bachelor’s degree in Wuhan Conservatory of Music in 2021, majoring in Composition. She has earned her Master’s Degree in Screen Scoring from New York University in 2023, studying under Paul Chihara.

As an award-winning composer, Mengxue’s original score for the documentary Journey was nominated for LA Indie short fest's BEST ORIGINAL SCORE. In 2023, the documentary Duet she co-scored, was the winner of 2023 Student Academy Awards. She has collaborated on multiple projects with filmmakers from NYU Tisch, Columbia University, SVA and FIT. She is also a recipient of the 2023 ASCAP Columbia University Film Scoring Workshop. In 2022, she won the Honorable Mention of Krakow FMF-YoungTalentAward Competition as well as the winner of the 2022 NYU Steinhardt Film Score Composition Competition. Her electronic music “Dialogue with the Future” and “Moonlit Shadow” were both selected for 2018 and 2020 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC).

She Scores 2024 welcomes back soprano Lara Troyer!

Described as singing with an engaging, robust tone (clevelandclassical.com), Ms. Troyer is a versatile soprano, at home on the opera stage as well as concert and recital stage. Most recently, she performed the Ohio premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Orpheus and Euridice with Nightingale Opera. This season has included solo engagements with Heights Chamber Orchestra and the Chagrin Falls Studio Orchestra.

Ms. Troyer has toured with the New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra as their soprano soloist throughout the Midwest and Southeastern United States. She also spent four years as an Associate Artist with Cleveland Opera. She has made solo appearances with the Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Kent Chorus and Orchestra, Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Summer Series, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, and PAND (Cleveland). She has sung lead roles with Lansing Lyric Opera, Nightingale Opera, Lorain Community College and Akron Opera Theatre (Guest Artist for both), Opera in the Ozarks, and Bay View Music Festival. Last spring she sang a recital of new music for the Cleveland Composers Guild. Ms. Troyer recently performed a Midwest recital tour sponsored by Allied Concert Services.

She won the Alpha Corinne Mayfield Award in Opera Performance under the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Sing Lansing! Competition; was a finalist in the Opera Columbus Competition and the National Opera Association Vocal Competition; and a regional winner in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award (NATSAA) competition. Ms. Troyer regularly performs under the auspices of Center for Arts-Inspired Learning and The Children’s Concert Society of Akron. She has served on the voice faculty at the University of Akron and The College of Wooster, and currently teaches at Kent State University.

Ms. Troyer will sing "All One Can Imagine" by Ellen Ruth Harrison, "Network" by Eunji Lee, and "Fractal Heart" by Karen Griebling.

Here is She Scores featured composer of the day, Kirsten Strom!

Kirsten is an award-winning young composer, conductor and creative writer. From a life-changing encounter with God as a child, she is drawn to biblical themes, spatial design, the beauty of nature and multimedia. Her credo is to glorify God in her work, like Bach before her. Her music has been performed internationally, commissioned, and aired on radio in her native New Zealand.

Significant performances include her work "Ktisis", painting God's creation of light, selected internationally for the Asian Composers League Festival, Taiwan. Kirsten was the 2018-19 Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Young Composer-in-Residence. Her work "Ice" won the NZSO Orchestra's Choice Award and was recorded in 2019. She was also a Composer Fellow at Etchings Festival 2019 in France under Kaija Saariaho and others. Her work “Moodscenes” was selected for the Risuonanze Festival in Trieste, Italy. She released her first classical album Wavering Lines in 2019, whose titular piece was shortlisted for ISCM Music Days. Her work Trees, representing Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, was selected for Sounds Like THIS Festival with Ligeti Quartet (UK) in 2020.

Kirsten Strom holds a Master of Music with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music. She is currently commissioned for Boon Arts Sculpture Trail 2024 and is an arranger and composer for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Her featured work is "The Book of Life" for cello and electronics.

It’s our final weekend before She Scores 2024 concerts, and today we give thanks for one of our fine cellists, Jeffrey Singler!

Jeff Singler is a professional cellist and educator based out of Cleveland. He teaches privately and at The Music Settlement, has served as cello faculty at Youngstown State University and Ohio University, and is in demand as a teacher, music coach, and lecturer across Northeast Ohio. Mr. Singler performs regularly with the Erie Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Walden Players, Obsidian Quartet, and with Prism ensemble.

Mr. Singler was formerly Principal Cellist of the Ohio Valley Symphony, and has performed with the Blossom Festival Orchestra, Blue Water Chamber Orchestra, Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony, West Virginia Symphony, Warren Philharmonic, and Youngstown Symphony, where he has filled in as Principal cellist. He has also been Acting Principal Cello in Erie, and frequently fills in as Principal or Assistant Principal in that orchestra.

Mr. Singler is an active recitalist and chamber musician, including guest artist recitals for First Night Canfield, the Bratenahl Chamber Music Series, and the Cain Park Concert series. He has also been featured as a guest soloist with the Ashtabula Orchestra, The Butler Choral Society, The Salem Youth Chorus, the Canton Comic Opera Company, the Dana Symphony at Youngstown State University, and the Erie Philharmonic.

Mr. Singler has collaborated in chamber music performance with many renowned musicians, His solo and chamber music performances have been broadcast over WYSU in Youngstown, WQED in Pittsburgh, and WQLN in Erie, PA. Several performances are available on YouTube as well.

Mr. Singler holds degrees from Youngstown State University and the Cleveland Institute of Music, and has taken part in the Aspen Music Festival and the Bowdoin Music Festival. His most influential teachers have included Michael Gelfand, Alan Harris, Mark Schroeder, Peter Howard, Richard Weiss, and Bryan Dumm.

One of the talented saxophonists playing on She Scores 2024 is Perry Roth!

Perry Roth is on faculty at Kent State University’s Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, The College of Wooster, The Hartt School Community Division, and is the saxophone teaching artist for the Yale School of Music—Music in Schools Initiative. He holds the
tenor saxophone chair in the Barkada Quartet, which he joined in the spring of 2017. As an avid performer, he has performed with the Baton Rouge Symphony, the Connecticut Valley Symphony, the Hartt Symphony, the JACK Quartet, the American Modern Ensemble, and the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra.

He previously taught at The Hartt School, University of Hartford (College Division) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In the summers, he is the saxophone teaching artist for the Yale School of Music—Morse Summer Music Academy. In addition to his collegiate studies, Dr. Roth has performed in the Brevard Music Center summer festival, and was awarded fellowships as the first-ever saxophonist at both New Music on the Point in 2014 and Yale’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, New Music Workshop in 2018.

He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance with a minor in music history from The Hartt School, University of Hartford. At Hartt, he was a graduate teaching fellow and recipient of the Regents’ Honor Award, the university’s most prestigious award for graduate students. He earned a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Louisiana State University, where he was the saxophone teaching assistant. She Scores 2024 violist Laura Shuster!

Violist Laura Shuster holds music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Peabody Institute, and a degree in Religions from Case Western Reserve University.

As a busy freelance violist, she is currently principal of Bluewater Chamber Orchestra and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony. She has also performed with Pittsburgh Symphony, Opera Cleveland Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, Playhouse Square productions, and various chamber ensembles. She is on the recent recording of music by Margaret Brouwer entitled “Shattered.”

Ms. Shuster will perform "Nostalgia" by Elizabeth Start, and "Silent Running" by Mengxue Tan.
