It's a big sports day in Ohio, with Ohio State football on this afternoon and the Cleveland Guardians possibly heading to the ALCS tonight. Meanwhile, I'm over here photographing pottery before all the sports get underway. πŸ˜†

I'm getting ready to stock my online shop for the holidays, and this requires a different approach to product photography. I've learned a lot about lighting, backgrounds, camera angles, and just how hard it can be to get an accurate photo of a piece of pottery.

Here's one of my indigo print platters, photographed gallery-style for the shop. A little different from my usual photos - more to come as I get the shop ready!

Bonus part of being a potter....if you fall in love with a piece you made, you can keep it for yourself! πŸ˜‰πŸ₯°

Taking a little pottery break by spending the weekend watching Ohio State football and rooting for our Cleveland Guardians to win their division. 🀞

I'll be back at it shortly getting ready for holiday sales and my online shop! Message me if you have a pottery gift in mind for someone.

You guys. I had the best time at Kent Art in the Park. And my favorite part? All the amazing connections and conversations that happened over the two days. πŸ₯°

Meeting you all is truly the most fun part of this gig. THANK YOU for giving my pottery good homes and for taking the time to chat about art, pottery, what inspires you, and what makes your life more joyful.

Also, thank you for letting me pet your dogs....a favorite part of outdoor events! 🐾🐢

Seriously, I could talk about this stuff all day. And apparently I did. πŸ˜†

I love it all! πŸ’™πŸ€

Somehow all of this fit in my car. πŸ˜†

I remembered the tent, the tables, the pottery AND the card reader, so I’m calling this a win. πŸ…

I’m at Kent Art in the Park today and tomorrow with approximately 256 reasons why I haven’t done much else lately. Stop by and admire my ability to cram breakable objects into a Subaru. πŸ˜†

One of the things I really enjoy about doing art fairs in college towns is seeing the students come out to browse. They were so much fun to talk to last year in Oberlin, and I'm looking forward to that again at Kent Art in the Park.

I like having some smaller $10 pieces on my table for exactly that reason. You don't need a big budget to find some handmade pottery that you like.

These little trinket dishes (and a whole bunch of other ones!) will be coming with me to Kent. πŸ’™

Meet the blocks behind the cups. πŸ’™

I thought it would be fun to put each one next to the wood block that made its pattern. I don't know why, but seeing them together is just fun!

So here they are. πŸ˜„

Pottery involves a lot of experimenting and a fair amount of waiting to see what happens. Sometimes you open the kiln and get a very good result and sometimes you don't. These came out of the kiln and I might have done a little happy dance. πŸ˜†πŸ’™

I recently tweaked a couple of things with the materials I use for my blue and white printing, and these were some of the first pieces I fired after making those changes. The pattern came out exactly the way I wanted it to...probably the best result since I've started doing this.

I have about a dozen posts in my head about all the life lessons pottery has taught me...being willing to get things wrong, trying something new when the old way isn't working, sitting with disappointment, and trying again anyway.

Today I'm just going to enjoy the fact that this one worked. πŸ˜„

I use my wood blocks for printing the blue and white patterns, but that's only one way I use them in my pottery.

For these trinket dishes, I pressed the blocks directly into the clay to create the pattern, then used glaze to bring out the texture.

I keep finding different ways to use the same blocks...printing with them, stamping into the clay, using the whole pattern or maybe just part of it...lots of possibilities packed into one little piece of carved wood. πŸ’™
