SPACEcraft was one of five proposals presented to a public arts panel selected by Creative Pinellas, and in Dec. 2018 this project was selected for activation.

An original work conceived and produced by artists Carrie Boucher, Bridget Elmer, and Mitzi Jo Gordon, SPACEcraft traveled throughout Pinellas County for three years with the support of Creative Pinellas and the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners. Learn more at the link in our bio.

Socially engaged art is collaborative and participatory, with the shared act of creation as its focus. The connections it builds are the core of the practice, and the product is engagement. Any artifact made in the moment — like a clay pot or a paper bag puppet — is simply evidence of time spent together.

Holding space for open-ended exploration invites curiosity, encouraging people to think of themselves in new ways as makers and artists.

Participation in community arts projects is shown to support positive public health outcomes. As people create side-by-side, they can build connections across perceived differences, and see each other’s humanity while sharing simple joys.

The onset of the pandemic (coincidentally timed with the original opening date of SPACEcraft) brought the importance of these simple, healthy interactions into stark focus.

The SPACEcraft traveling public art project delivered free, accessible creative engagement to neighborhood parks throughout Pinellas County for a period of three years, funded by a grant from Creative Pinellas and supported by a team of more than 50 artists.

Since the project’s closure in 2023, our team has been hard at work assembling a final review. Available this Spring in print and online, our upcoming book chronicles the story of SPACEcraft, exploring project development from idea to reality, and providing an in-depth view of this one-of-a-kind, collaborative, social practice art experience.
