Art Is Not Entertainment.

Today, while perusing the Tampa Bay Times Weekend Section, I noticed that almost every bit of that pullout section is devoted to one or another kind of entertainment- every story, every listing and even every advertisement.

It was not until I got to the last page that art was even mentioned. In the front lists of things to do, there were "arts & crafts" events and "artisan" sales, whatever that is, but none of strictly art or artists.

My bit of an "ah ha" moment came on realizing that the stories, listings and ads were to entice a paying public to come and be entertained for a little while. National Daiquiri Day, Pickleball Lessons, Raw Live Wrestling Reunion, Ballroom Swing Dance, Meet The Dolphin Tale Stars- the lists and stories go on and on.

Art gets short shrift in the media and in society because it resists commodification and the pigeon-hole moniker of entertainment. Art challenges us, it makes us think and may even make us uncomfortable. Opening up to art changes people and flies in the face of status quo beliefs. And for that reason, art can be dangerous. But, thankfully, art can never be about entertainment.

Celebrating local artists in our community! Each quarter we feature a new artist's work in our café.

Quarter 4: Suzanne Fleming

Suzanne is fueled by the immense vastness of the southwest desert of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico with its mysterious chiseled rock formations - as well as a lifetime spent on beaches and tropical isles, drinking in the sky, horizon and lush foliage - such places as Barbados, Costa Rica, Belize, Hawaii, Bahamas and of course Florida.
For her - the desert landscape is exposed, harsh, raw, bare, sparce, dry, ancient. The tropical landscape is steamy, rampantly lush, inviting, teeming with life. Both can be intimate - even in their immensity - both are her inspiration.

Quarter 3: Curtis Whitwam (www.curtiswhitwam.org)

Born and raised in Tampa, Curtis's love for Florida’s waterways and wildlife is expressed through his art. He feels most at home underwater or paddling. He loves to share the feeling of deep connection to nature through watercolor paintings and underwater videos that he creates to inspire everyone to get outside and appreciate the beauty and abundance of wild Florida.

Quarter 2: Denis Gaston Art (www.denisgaston.com)

Denis is a long time friend of The Patch! He draws much of his inspiration from indigenous
art from around the world. It is an honor to host his unique pieces for the next 3 months.

Twelve artists from the Professional Association of Visual Artists (PAVA) are exhibiting their varied media visual art at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater. I know where I'll be this evening. Gallery 221 @ HCC. in Tampa for Charles Parkhill's excellent new exhibition. 5 pm - 7 pm. Q&A 6 pm.

On sculpture, Parkhill states:“Traditionally, sculpture is made by removing material from a block of wood or stone, or by modeling clay or wax. My method of working usually starts by adding material such as wood or metal. It is a building process much like an architect constructs a house. Once I hav...

Art Takes Miami

I receive many of these artist opportunities announcements and all of them want lots of my money. This one is probably no different, but I couldn't find where it says "...and it only costs $3500.00 and a pound of flesh."

This is your moment to present your work at the premier showcase for international contemporary art.
