Michael Answers Your Questions:
Do you have questions about color or technique? We are here to answer them for you!

The question and answer below are from a previous Newsletter:

Q: I rather like the subtlety of Carmine watercolor paint. However, I have read that it can sometimes fade. Can you please advise?

A It is not so much that genuine Carmine can fade, but that it will, soon after it leaves the tube.

I have tested Carmine in various lighting conditions and it always faded to a pale brown in a fairly short period of time. A natural red, it is produced from the bodies of tiny beetles and is the same material as that used in food coloring where it is known as Cochineal. It makes better pink cake icing than paint!

Do not be deceived by the fact that genuine Carmine is often marketed as an Artist’s Quality paint as it is entirely unsuitable for artists tic expression (and icing for vegetarians perhaps). If you want to be sure of the ingredients, look for the description NR 4 (Natural Red 4) on the label, and avoid it. If you wish to work with a similar but reliable violet-red I would suggest using Quinacridone Violet as the base color and darkening as required with Phthalocyanine Green or Viridian. Such a mix will also be as transparent as Carmine, if not more so.

It’s so impressive that not only is this a studio for artists to work on their art, but also a safe space for art critique and workshopping as well. As a lover of all genres of art, I love to know when fun things are happening in the Clearwater/Tampa local art scene. Next week on the 17th, the Gasparilla International Film Festival is kicking off until the 22nd! There are 120 movies showing throughout the week, and all are $12 except for opening and closing nights. There will also be free panels that anyone can attend with the creators of some of the films, and industry professionals. It should be another fantastic local art activity in the Tampa area! :)
Heading to the studio at 11:15 for a few hours. Anyone?
