🎪🎟️Tattoos, Sideshows & Circuses✒️🎨

Sideshows and circuses played a surprising and important role in women's history, largely thanks to their tattoos. In the mid-19th century, when women had few opportunities for economic independence, female sideshow performers voluntarily tattooed themselves to make their own money¹. Wealthy socialites also got tattoos as a form of rebellion against social mores that required them to keep their whole bodies covered¹. By the turn of the 20th century, roughly three-fourths of fashionable New York City ladies had gotten similarly trendy tattoos, including butterflies, flowers, and dragons¹.

Though some early sideshow performers told stories about how their tattoos had been forced upon them during kidnappings, those stories were eventually replaced with narratives of personal liberation and freedom². Other tattooed attractions chose to turn their body art into a way to make a living by covering themselves with tattoos and then joining up with the sideshows, circuses, or carnivals that charged the public to see the strange sight of men and women with permanent art on their bodies³.

Tattoos were an early way that women took control of their bodies and expressed themselves in a society that often sought to limit their freedom¹.

🔮✨Tattoos & Witchcraft✒️🎨
Tattoos have been a part of witchcraft and pagan culture for centuries. In ancient times, tattoos were used to signify a person's status, rank, or spiritual beliefs¹. Today, tattoos are still used as a way to express one's connection to witchcraft and magic.

Witchcraft tattoos often feature symbols that have deep spiritual meanings. For example, Norse runes make up an entire alphabet, and each of the 25 symbols has its specific meaning. These symbols are used in spells and conjuring by practicing Witches and have been since before the Middle Ages¹. The phases of the moon are fundamental in the world of witchcraft, so it is common to see moon phases tattooed on witches¹.

Witches, Wiccans, and Pagans alike are proudly wearing tattoos that not only express their personality but are reflective of the faith they are so dedicated to. Even though witches are far more accepted today, there are still many misconceptions surrounding their lifestyle. Although a large number of people often equate witchcraft with evil, the truth is there is a balance like any other faith. For instance, Wiccans typically believe in “oneness with nature’, which is a very feminine-centric faith, where practitioners worship and pray through goddesses that are rooted in nature¹.

✒️🎨 Tattoo Etiquette: The General Do’s & Don’ts of Getting a Tattoo! 🧐🫡

1. Do your research: Find a tattoo artist/studio that suits your needs and preferences. Check whether they provide proper and professional service, and look for public reviews of the studio. Inform yourself about the tattoo artists who work there and what kind of work they do. Tattoo studios nowadays have a strong online presence, so make sure to check their social media sites for pictures and catalogs of their work.

2. Know what kind of tattoo you want: When you come to a tattoo appointment, you need to have a potential tattoo design in mind. Find some reference images to bring, or present your ideas to the tattoo artist who can perfect them into the final design. Either way, do not come empty-handed. It will take too much time from the actual process, and the tattoo artist cannot simply guess what you may like.

3. Choose an available date: When setting up an appointment, make sure to do so by choosing a date when you’ll be fully available. Unless something serious or of emergency comes up, it is rude to reschedule a tattoo appointment. So, make sure to link up with the studio to talk about the potential date.

4. Take care of your hygiene: Before the actual appointment, make sure to take a shower. Shave the area where the tattoo will be placed if necessary. Do not use any lotions or oils on your skin before getting a tattoo.

5. Do not drink or consume any substances: A few days prior to the appointment, stay away from alcohol or other substances.

6. Do not touch the Artist’s equipment/supplies: it is rude, and unsanitary to touch the artist supplies/equipment ( ex. Machine, inks/ink caps, transfer paper, sanitary disposable wrapping for equipment, ect. ). Prior to your tattoo your artist will fully sanitize their equipment and station to avoid any cross-contamination and lessen the risks of infection. When you touch our equipment, and have not properly sanitize yourself ( unwashed & ungloved hands ) you are creating potential cross-contamination.

7. Never touch someone's tattoo without consent: It is important to respect someone's personal space and body.

8. Keep your fidgety fingers from reaching out to feel, rub, or pinch a tattoo: This is considered rude and can be uncomfortable for the person who has just gotten a tattoo.

9. Refrain from asking to see ink that is partially covered by clothing: It is not polite to ask someone to undress in order to show off their tattoos.

10. Hold back from pointing out any imperfections, mistakes, or spelling errors you might find: It is important to remember that tattoos are permanent and that people have different tastes.

11. Keep your stories of your dad's, your friend's, or your second cousin twice removed's tattoos to yourself: People generally don't like unsolicited advice or stories about other people's

For those who aren’t aware we are an by appointment only operation! We can almost NEVER do walk-ins, unless you come along with someone for their appointment. ✨

You can always try to message me early enough in the day to try and schedule a time slot for later that afternoon, but otherwise please be aware that you will need to set up an appointment prior to coming to get a tattoo or piercing! ❤️
We currently do not have a separate waiting room/area and clean up/set up takes 45+ minutes between each appointment, so being able to organize my clienteles arrivals by appointment is the best way to give myself time to sanitize and prepare for the next client.

Once we are in our own studio, things will be different, we will have hours of operation posted, and walk-ins will be welcome!☺️

🕰️🌎 Tattoos Throughout Time and Cultures ✒️🎨

Tattoos are permanent forms of body art that belong to a multitude of different cultures all over the world¹. The oldest evidence of human tattoos is believed to be from between 3370 BC and 3100 BC¹. Otzi the Iceman, discovered in September 1991, has naturally mummified and preserved tattoos, making him Europe's oldest human mummy¹. Tattooing has been practiced across the globe since at least Neolithic times³. Ancient Germanic and Celtic tribes widely practiced tattooing as a culture².

Tattooing practices have evolved over time, and societal attitudes toward tattoos have changed as well¹. For example, ancient Chinese literature refers to folk heroes and bandits as having tattoos. It was also common for convicted criminals to be branded with a tattoo on their face as a warning to others¹.
