JODI IMMS – GREATGOURDS

Jodi uses a wide variety of techniques such as carving, painting, burning and dying
to transform the gourds into decorative pieces
This year, Jodi will introduce “Thunder Gourds” to the MIC show!
Thunder Gourds are created by cutting the bottom off, cleaning the insides and
then attaching a “skin” to the bottom. A flexible spring is threaded from inside the
gourd to the center of the skin. When the gourd is shaken, sound waves are
created that mimic the sound of thunder!

Themes vary as well- which keeps me fresh and for ever looking and observing the world around us as well as the places in our dreams.

Shelley Edward’s Windchimes

Shelley makes a variety of windchimes which all reflect Arizona’s rich history in copper mining. All windchimes are made with steel cutouts which are tempered with heat to enhance the color, copper piping, copper wire, and glass beads. The steel cutouts reflect many things that are present in Arizona, such as desert scenes, cactus, Kokopelli, lizards, coyotes, turtles, dragonflies, butterflies, hummingbirds, flowers, Native American symbolism, etc. The copper piping, flowers, and wire are all a direct nod to our history with copper mining. Glass beads are used not only for their beauty but also because they do not fade in the sun. Each windchime has a unique sound which is very pleasant. They make a wonderful enhancement to any yard!

Julie Ford was trained in both traditional lead and copper foil techniques and incorporates both in her work emphasizing vibrant color, and form with a strong southwest influence.
