ArtWorks’ second Gallery Fellowship of the 2026 season is now accepting applications! 🎉

We are looking for artists ages 16-24 to participate in our Gallery Fellowship Program under the guidance of Artist-in-Residence James Marshall, aka Dalek (), creating pieces for a group exhibition titled “Back to Basics.”

In an age defined by complexity and digital dependence, this residency invites artists to rediscover the power of making art with the most essential tools. Participants will work with simple materials, embrace intuition, and explore automatic and instinctive mark-making through drawing, painting, screen printing, and digital illustration using Illustrator. With individual exploration and collaborative group projects, this fellowship encourages community, experimentation, and creative risk-taking, reminding artists that in returning to the basics, we find infinite possibilities.

The application deadline is Monday, December 8. Learn more and apply by clicking here: https://tr.ee/BACK-TO-BASICS

Life imitates art and use versa

Every year, scientists from around the world join a unique competition called the Agar Art Contest — where the “paint” is alive.

Instead of colors from a palette, they use real bacteria grown inside petri dishes.
Each microbe creates its own natural pigment:
🟥 Serratia — bright red
🟨 Bacillus — warm yellow
🟪 Chromobacterium — deep violet
🟩 Pseudomonas — teal green
🟦 Engineered E. coli — glowing blue and neon UV colors

Using toothpicks, loops, and tiny swabs as brushes, scientists “draw” on a gel surface — and then wait.
Over the next 24–72 hours, the artwork slowly appears as the bacteria grow and the colors deepen.

The final pieces are breathtaking:
✨ Van Gogh’s Starry Night made of glowing microbes
✨ Portraits and mandalas built from living cells
✨ A peacock created with seven different bacterial species
✨ Landscapes, galaxies, trees — all alive

The best part?
After photographing the masterpiece, the art is destroyed for safety. Nothing lasts forever — not even living paintings.
