The Implicit Danger of “One More Time”

Who hasn’t been schooling a horse, and had the horse do something that wasn’t just to our liking, and thought, “Well, I better have him do it one more time.”

And then, if it still wasn’t just right, “one MORE time.”

And then again---Meanwhile, the horse may well be getting more tired, more confused, more upset. So now the rider gets more frustrated, more exasperated, more demanding.

At best, the rider realizes the error of pushing for perfection and stops before it gets too bad. At worst, it can literally kill you, as was the case a few years ago when a rider kept insisting that her horse jump a certain jump, until it tried, and fell over on her.

One strategy that might help those with a perfectionist bent is to substitute “pretty good” for good, or even “sort of OK” for good. Perhaps by lowering our requirements from “THIS MUST BE PERFECT” to “That was a good try,” we can avoid the temptation to grind---

Horses tend not to deal well with being ground on.

Are Negative Core Beliefs Holding Your Riding Back? - The Plaid Horse Magazine

BY LAUREN MAULDIN Core beliefs aren’t about religion, though I imagine most of us have cantered to a single oxer in a “Jesus take the wheel” situation at least once. I’d be lying if this kind of divine intervention hasn’t helped me through a sticky spot or two, but that’s not what I’m ...

Another wonderful horse named Queensland….

Another wonderful horse named Queensland….

For as long as I can remember I have had one dream—become an Olympian…it has dictated my sporting career, my personal life and pretty much every facet of my being for the last 30 years. I am an athlete, first and foremost and I have spent more than a decade helping to build the first ever Israeli Equestrian Olympic Team. A long time ago I had a choice to represent the US or Israel and for me, it was the easiest decision I ever made…to bring pride and honor to my heritage and those who came before me. I have a deep love for Israel and it is a privilege to be given the opportunity to represent my country. There have been tremendous challenges, setbacks, doubts and struggles over the years but today I can say that perseverance has paid off…Queensland and I are officially headed to Tokyo to represent Israel in the Games next month. Dreams like this are not achieved alone and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the army of incredible horses and people it took to get here. Alongside my teammates @ashleembond , @teddyvlock and @abymichan, we will do our utmost to make Israel proud.

#Tokyo2021—here we come! 💪🇮🇱#flyingfeathers #ownyouRIDEntity @israel_equestrian_federation @olympicteamisrael @equeteamil 📸 @iziphotoart_photography

STOLEN but significant.

“Horses are so expensive”
I agree, they cost me a lot every day.

Horses cost you your selfishness.
Having horses means every day you are alive you must consider someone’s needs before your own, multiple times a day. Even when you’re away from them arrangements must be made, this builds character and gives us self-worth.

Horses cost you your ego.
Right when you think you have it figured out, you will undoubtedly be presented with a humbling experience either in the arena or out. They will force you to reach out for help when your expertise is maxed out. If you are wise, you will realize life is like this too. Maybe we should reach out for help more frequently and we would get further.

Horses cost you your laziness.
You will never progress with an equine partner by leaving it turned out, just as you will never progress by staying checked out. Do the work and you will get somewhere.

Horses cost you your heart.
They never fail to find a way to touch us deep within even (and especially) when we are feeling cold to the ways of the world. There’s something special about getting to interact with a being that becomes softer when we soften. We should learn to respond to one another similarly.

Yes, horses are so expensive. But everything they’ve ever cost me has also made me 👏🏻
