This happened last Thursday afternoon at Pinecrest Animal Shelter in Boise, Idaho. The young man's name is Thomas. He's 27. He came in to drop off donated cat food—bags he'd collected from his apartment complex. That was the whole plan: drop the food, then leave.
On his way out, one of the volunteers asked if he wanted to walk through the kennels, just to see. Thomas said sure, for five minutes. That's where he met a three-year-old Siamese cat named Hank.
Hank had been at the shelter since early November. He'd been returned once already, after six weeks with a family who said he was "too needy." Staff had been working with him—he was a sweet, affectionate Siamese cat, but he had a hard time with goodbyes.
Thomas spent about fifteen minutes sitting on the floor with the elegant, blue-eyed Siamese cat. Let Hank climb onto him and scratched behind those soft ears. Then Thomas checked his phone, realized how late it was, and stood up to go.
Hank didn’t make a sound. The Siamese cat simply reached up and grabbed Thomas's sleeve with both front paws. Thomas took a step toward the door. Hank held on, his slim body sliding slightly across the floor, still gripping tightly.
Thomas stopped. Stood completely still. Looked down at the cat shaking at his feet. The shelter volunteer in the room, a woman named Paula, said she'd worked at the shelter for six years and had never seen Hank do that to anyone.
"He wasn't being bad," Paula said. "He was just scared. You could see it on his face. He'd been left before and he wasn't ready to do it again."
Thomas stood in that doorway for almost two full minutes, just looking at Hank. Hank looking back up at him with those soft, pleading eyes. Then Thomas sat back down on the floor. Hank immediately leaned his head into Thomas's lap and pressed himself close.
Thomas completed the paperwork forty minutes later. He told us: "I came to drop off cat food. I didn't come to take a cat home. But when he grabbed me like that... I just couldn't go."
Hank went home with Thomas that evening. According to Thomas, the Siamese cat slept pressed against him the entire night.
Some connections don't ask politely.
They just hold on until you understand. 🐾
