Chicago Fringe Opera is thrilled to be the recipients of an OPERA America Repertoire Development Grant to commission and produce the first musical workshop of Khary Laurent (composer and co-librettist) and D. Vincent Thomas Jr. Ph.D M.T.S. (original creator and co-librettist)'s "hiphopera" BLACK CAESAR: From Slave, to Pirate, to Legend.

Enslaved in Africa and bound for the New World, Caesar seizes his freedom in a daring revolt that hurls him into the ruthless world of piracy. Gifted with intelligence, charisma, and ferocity, he becomes “Black Caesar,” a feared captain navigating treachery, loyalty, and love on the high seas. As empires clash and rebellion brews, Caesar transforms from captive to conqueror — his legend born of blood, betrayal, and destiny. Black Caesar: From Slave, to Pirate, to Legend is a sweeping opera of power, liberation, and the unbreakable will of a man who refused to be chained by history.

Partnering with The Meshé Legacy, Chicago Fringe Opera will showcase this work in Chicagoland as a part of our upcoming '26-'27 season.

The lower level of the bridge at Michigan Avenue, (now named DuSable Bridge) shown here circa 1920s. The main purpose of having a double deck bridge was to reduce traffic problems by creating a separate, lower deck for commercial vehicles, which were often in the way of passenger traffic and connecting the new boulevard with the boulevard systems of the North and South side. The old Rush Street Bridge, which was the city's most eastward bridge had long been a congested bottle neck connecting the North and South side.
