Flying House

Flying House Flying House is an annual collaboration project that kicks off in the spring with the announcement of six artist-writer pairs. Then, we celebrate.

Each participant is partnered with someone in an opposing field (i.e. a sculpture artist with a language poet) and asked to collaborate over long distances. They must bump into walls, force themselves over thresholds, and stop just short of flying out the window—because at the end of the six months, each pair is required to produce both a visual representation of their collaboration, as well as a

piece of short fiction, poetry, or nonfiction. We cover the walls and halls and floorboards of our gallery space with all of the year’s paintings, films, photography, and more, and we set up a stage for the writers to scream their words aloud before a large public audience. Next, we bottle up the whole experience and produce the Flying House annual anthology, on sale at the gallery event, online, and soon, in local independent bookstores around Chicago and elsewhere.
