Chicago’s stages are overflowing with great choices this weekend, but these three productions shine especially bright - each offering a completely different reason to grab a ticket.

If you want something intimate, inventive, and emotionally charged, [producingbody]’s Spaceman at The Edge Off Broadway is the standout. It’s a tightly focused, deeply human story wrapped in a visually striking production - small in scale, huge in impact, and the kind of show that lingers with you long after you leave the theatre.

For something completely different, Chicago Shpatz’s Firehouse at Firehouse Art Studio brings a raw, immediate, community rooted energy. It’s bold, physical, and alive in a way only Chicago storefront theatre can pull off. If you’re craving a show that feels handcrafted and urgent, this one hits the spot.

And if you want pure joy, spectacle, and a night that leaves your face sore from laughing, Broadway In Chicago's Spamalot at the CIBC Theatre is delivering the goods. It’s big, bright, and gloriously ridiculous - the perfect downtown anchor to a weekend packed with variety.

Three distinct productions, all well worth seeking out. Chicago theatre is operating at a remarkable level.

"David Koechner’s Den Theatre run was rowdy, personal, and unmistakably his."

David Koechner stormed into The Den Theatre’s Mainstage this weekend with the kind of unruly, big‑hearted presence that instantly reminded audiences why he had been a comedy fixture for more than two decades. People knew him as the blustering Champ Kind from Anchorman, the delightfully inappropr...

“Mysterious, otherworldly, and experiential — ‘Fire House’ pulls you into another dimension.”

Set in Chicago’s oldest fire station (now Firehouse Art Studio) the immersive play "Fire House” is only loosely tethered to a realistic portrayal of what fire fighters do. What it conveys is an impressionistic vision of the experience that fire fighters may undergo. Produced by Chicago Shpa...

Broadway In Chicago brings Spamalot back to Chicago and Spamalot "is an irresistibly fun choice."

Spamalot rides into the Windy City courtesy of Broadway In Chicago, inviting theatergoers to join King Arthur’s quest now through May 31 at the CIBC Theatre. Fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail - the 1975 cult classic - will find plenty to adore in this musical, which, as its subtitle proudly ...

Chicago’s weekend theatre slate is stacked with range, ambition, and the kind of artistry that reminds you why this city’s stages matter.

At A Red Orchid Theatre, The Targeted delivers a taut, nerve‑tight drama in the company’s signature close‑quarters style - intimate, volatile, and built to leave you buzzing as you spill back onto Wells Street.

Over at Trap Door Theatre, Le Bal erupts in a swirl of movement, satire, and surrealist invention, a full‑body theatrical jolt from one of Chicago’s most fearless ensembles.

And TimeLine Theatre Company christens its stunning new home with An Enemy of the People, a muscular, sharply staged moral showdown that feels both classic and alarmingly current inside a space designed to elevate every beat.

Two special mentions round out the city’s must‑sees: The Conspirators' Tartuffe, or, The Charlatan, a wickedly funny, razor‑edged riff on Molière, and Raven Theatre's Work Hard Have Fun Make History, a smart, contemporary look at ambition, burnout, and the stories we tell ourselves about success.

If you want a weekend that captures the full spectrum of Chicago theatre - intimate, explosive, political, surreal, and freshly minted - these five titles make a compelling case to get out and see something live.

Downtown Aurora’s Paramount Theatre returns to one of the reasons it’s become the largest subscription theater in the U.S. – producing bold reinventions of classic American musicals – with a lush new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, now through June 14, 2026.

Set in a World War II tropical paradise with warm sea breezes, breathless sunsets and B-29 Bombers, South Pacific is arguably the most romantic musical of all time, and also an uplifting tale that reminds us all of the importance of celebrating cultural differences.

"Few plays argue for compassion with this much fire."

If you’ve ever worked in an urban coffee shop, chances are you’ve encountered at least one ultra-paranoid kook who believes the government is spying on them. Often they’re filling out long journals or manifestos. Or perhaps that one crazy uncle we all seem to have who believes in way too many ...

"In Trap Door’s Le Bal, a century of history unfolds through music, movement, and vivant tableaux unlike anything else on a Chicago stage."

Can you have a play run 90 minutes with no dialog? Indubitably, as Trap Door Theatre demonstrates with its new production, “Le Bal.” Adapted to the stage by Stephen Buescher, it is inspired by a 1983 French film of the same title. Of the absence of dialog, one Trap Door company member told me&am...
