It is beyond time for this to end.
I could list all the victims of white on black violence our world has experienced in the past 5 or 10 years, as many have, and I’m so grateful they did, but you can read that elsewhere.
What I want to talk about is us. All of us, white, black, yellow, red and orange. This touches all of us. Yes, some, way more than others, and I would never begin to hint that I , a white woman, knows anything of the worry and struggle of people of color.
But this touches all of us, because we are all connected. As my son turns 12, I know he’s moving into a world that is designed for him. He doesn’t have to learn how stop everything when he approached by an officer, he can reach for a bag of m&ms, in his pocket and wearing a hoodie, and be met with only smiles. But he’s not only my child and he’s not only my child. We raise our children together and as he turns 12 so do his friends of color, and I worry about them, I have helped raise them from babes, fed them at my table, learned the subtilties of their humor, they have protected my son, cared for him, heard his deepest secrets. I worry for them as if they were my own. I teach my son how to protect them knowing there isn’t much he can do.
My heart rips open for all of us. Why do we keep doing this to our own ? We are all one people on this earth. Where is the love? We teach love and compassion in our families, places of worship and schools, and yet we keep doing it.
And every time, we rise up, and there’s much love, but there’s also so much hate in response, too. We can’t fight hatred with hatred, we can only meet it with love. This fighting back and forth isn’t going to get us anywhere. YES. There is a clearly wrong side here. For 244 years we have fought. It isn’t working.
Yes. I am a white woman. I know NOTHING of the struggles of the African American community. I only know that I love my friends and my children’s friends and my friend’s children who are of all sorts of amazing colors. I want to protect them, but I don’t know how, except for to beg those who have hatred in their hearts for one side or another to ask themselves, how can I meet this moment with love instead of hatred.
For those of you with racism and prejudice in your hearts, I’d ask you to take a deep look at yourself, go out with an open heart and learn to love someone of the race you believe you hate. Even if it’s through books or movies. Learn their hearts, see how we are just the same. Mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters.
For those of you who are enraged by the violence committed against the people of color in our world(because this is not just a United States problem!), and I am in this group, let’s ask ourselves, in what way can we make this about love instead of hatred. Look our most fearless leader of peace-
MLK
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
For those of us who are not people of color, how can we stand up more in our communities. Can we do more than leave the room when someone says something racist? Can we speak up and make our stance known in social media? Let’s be brave and stand for love.
For those people of color reading this, what can we do for you? How can we make the world better, safer, and more supportive for you and your children?
I stand with you. Now and always. You are in my heart, I promise to do better. To find ways that I didn’t speak up before, and to do it better, to meet ignorance with a tone that has some hope of changing a heart, no matter how awkward it may seem. I promise to do better to change the hearts and minds of any person speaking against you.
I stand with you. ❤️
