One night, Jesus told His disciples to get into a boat and go ahead of Him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, while He went up the mountain alone to pray.
As the disciples sailed across the sea, a powerful storm suddenly arose. The wind became fierce, and huge waves began crashing against the boat. The disciples struggled for hours to keep the boat from being destroyed.
Then, sometime before dawn, they saw something unexpected. A human figure was walking toward them on the water. The disciples were frightened and cried out, thinking they were seeing a ghost.
But immediately, Jesus called out to them:
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Peter wanted to be sure it was really Jesus. So he said, “Lord, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water.”
Jesus simply said, “Come.”
Peter climbed out of the boat. For a moment, something impossible happened, Peter was actually walking on the water toward Jesus.
But then Peter looked around. He saw the powerful wind and the waves rising around him. Fear began to take control of his heart.
And as soon as he took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink. Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. Then Jesus said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Jesus and Peter climbed into the boat, and the wind suddenly became calm.
The disciples were amazed. They fell before Jesus and declared, “Truly, You are the Son of God.”
