Tracks of the Chicago L – Book Project in Progress

I’m excited to announce that I’ve started working on a full track map book of the Chicago “L,” titled Tracks of the Chicago L , inspired by Peter Dougherty’s legendary Tracks of the New York City Subway (nyctrackbook.com).

This project will map every line, yard, junction, and interlocking of the CTA system in full track-level detail, from the Loop’s tangle of steel to the far reaches of Howard, Forest Park, Kimball, and 95th/Dan Ryan.

My goal is to create something railfans, historians, and everyday riders can all enjoy, a book that’s accurate, easy to read, and full of Chicago character.

The book will also highlight railfan photo hotspots, such as the dramatic view from Cicero Station where the Green Line soars over the railroad tracks with the Chicago skyline in the distance.

I’m currently looking for contributors who know the system inside and out: signal maintainers, operators, historians, or anyone with insight into the L’s tracks, signals, platforms, yards, and major junctions.

Contributors will be credited in the book, and detailed write-ups may receive a byline on that specific subject or chapter. I’m also seeking reviewers to help check for accuracy of facts, names, and maps.

A photo contest for the book cover will be announced at a later date.

If you love the L, know its quirks, or have deep knowledge of its infrastructure, I’d love to hear from you.

WHOA! What are the odds?! I was mowing my front yard this morning when I spotted a tiny piece of rusty metal. I always clear out anything that could turn into a window-smashing projectile, so I dug it out… and couldn’t believe what I found.

A New York City Transit Authority token - the classic “Bullseye” design first used in 1986 until it was replaced by the “Five Boroughs” pentagram token in late 1995 — buried right here in my California front yard, almost 3,000 miles from NYC!

At first it was too rusted to tell, but that iconic bullseye pattern immediately caught my eye. After cleaning it up a bit, I could barely make out the faint “New York City Transit Authority” text - and that’s when it hit me what I’d just dug up.

Disclaimer: I do have a small collection of NYC tokens, all safely stored in a zip-lock bag and accounted for in a box. None have ever been taken out - not even before I bought this house. So this mystery token? Definitely not one of mine!

How it ended up on the property of a transit-loving map designer and upcoming book author remains one of life’s little mysteries!

Enjoyed my second trip to Chicago — this time with the wifey! ❤️

We followed her list of must-see spots (translation: no all-day L rides for me 😅), but I still managed to snag some great shots and videos along the way.

We rode plenty of CTA trains and buses, took the Amtrak Hiawatha up to Milwaukee for a day trip, and hopped on the M-Line Hops to get around town.

Of course, I couldn’t resist doing a little signal spotting in the Loop — all for my upcoming book project, Tracks of the Chicago L, which I’m aiming to release by next fall!
