Wheat / חִטָּה - I discover new ways to nourish my spirit.

Text by Lucy for Seeking Shleimut: A Postpartum Deck of Jewish Wisdom. The collection offers hope, healing, and wholeness (shleimut) through the joys and oys of early parenthood.
Drawing from Jewish stories, symbols, siblings and species, this deck of 40 kavanah (intention) cards and guidebook will accompany new parents through a sacred grounding practice in the first 40 days after birth and beyond.

Cat’s out of the bag: new project dropping Labor Day! Join us in the creation of the next chapter of Jewish organization and place making! Registration is open and we have about 45 spots available as I post this. Tag someone you want to share with or a family who might like to join us!

Camp Doikayt is building a Jewish summer camp experience without Nationalism and in support of joy and “hereness”. If you’d like to join us, you can register for our first family camp taking place this Labor Day weekend. Families with children ages zero to grown are invited. Our staff is busy preparing the camp schedule which includes arts and crafts, ropes courses, lake swimming, archery, bonfires with song session and s’mores, Jewish learning and prayer and more.

For those who can’t make it but would like to help out, there are other ways to support this project. You can send a donation that will make camp accessible to all families no matter their income. We would most appreciate if you share the project with someone for whom it may be relevant. Whether there’s a camper or a donor or someone interested in starting their own camp, we’d love to make that connection.

Etrog / אֶתרוֹג - I am living my heart’s greatest dreams.

For this card in the Seeking Shleimut: A Postpartum Deck of Jewish Wisdom by Lucy and Liza Bachrach I imagined a visual composite of two pieces of the etrog’s lore:

The etrog is traditionally shaped like a heart, symbolizing the spiritual heart where intellect and emotion manifest into action. It is often associated with the Kabbalistic attribute of Malchut, the physical world, and also the feminine divine (Shechinah represented by the changing phases of the moon here).

In Kabbalah, the attribute Tiferet, “glory” or “beaty” correspond to the human heart and upper torso. Tiferet represents compassion, emotional harmony, integrity, vulnerability, and the balance of opposites.

Pomegranate / רִמּוֹן - “I honor my wholeness, even in times of feeling empty.”

Text by for Seeking Shleimut, a forthcoming deck intended for finding wholeness in the throes of parenthood derived from Jewish story and wisdom. Still, I believe her writing has promise for finding solace and direction on any healing journey aka while in pursuit of living an examined life. 🫶

My world is so full these days that I’ve all but forgotten to post here. There’s a certain feeling of ease around my practice that probably comes with having a full time job while making work in the off time when I’m not with my family. It is a more private and slow way of making and when I am moved, I share here.

One such project that I’m compelled to share with you is Seeking Shleimut: A Postpartum Deck of Jewish Wisdom dreamed up by and her mother. It is a deck of 40 cards that aims to “offer hope, healing, and wholeness (shleimut) through the joys and oys of early parenthood. Drawing from Jewish stories, symbols, siblings and species, this deck of 40 kavanah (intention) cards will guide new parents through a sacred grounding practice in the first 40 days after birth and beyond.”

Gosh would I have loved this in the first 40 days and beyond when my babies were born. Alas, I’m sure I could still use these messages even years down the postpartum road.

I am one of four artists working on suits of 10 cards and am so looking forward to seeing its final form. Here you’ll preview five of the ten of the images I’ve created in honor of the Sacred Species: dates, honey, figs, barley, and grapes.

I made a poster for the Annual Spring Fundraiser Honoring Tzedek’s founder, Rabbi Brant Rosen.

This is my invitation for YOU to join in person March 21 and/or on Zoom March 22 and/or donate to an organization / community / cause close to my heart.

A tallit for my eldest niece, Layla. February 21, 2026.

Modeled after the tallit my grandmother gave me for my own bat mitzvah, this was my first time painting on silk. Over the summer, Layla asked that it have an image of a sunset and the words of Hashkiveinu on the atarah—her beloved camp prayer/song (my favorite wasn’t available to share on IG but plays my favorite version.) I held Layla’s vision in my mind for months before I could begin.

I live and create with ADHD. It gives me big, vivid ideas and a deep well of feeling — and it can also make starting overwhelming, especially when something matters this much. It is a struggle I am dealing with daily. This piece stretched me. I had to learn as I made, letting it be imperfect and real. There were parts I wish I’d timed differently. And there was also beauty in the way it unfolded.

I’m deeply grateful to Chicago legend dressmaker Julia Needlman, who transformed the painted silk panels I made into Layla’s tallit, kippah, and bag.

As I worked, I kept thinking about the Jewish concept of hiddur mitzvah — beautifying a mitzvah through care and intention. I think of this also as a metaphor for life. We beautify the moments in our lives not just with materiality, but in the care, intention, and love behind our actions and creations.

It was fitting that in Parashat Terumah, which Layla read so beautifully for her bat mitzvah, the community brings what they can to build the traveling Mishkan together in the desert. No one person makes it alone. Beauty emerges through contribution.

For Layla: I hope this tallit wraps you in confidence when you need strength and in calm when you need quiet. May it remind you to try again when things feel hard, to nurture your relationships — especially with your parents and sisters — and to remember that life is richer when we honor how deeply connected all beings truly are.
